IMPROVING ENGLISH VOCABULARY IN A PRACTICAL AND SMART WAY ✿

I came with a marvelous idea for using anki to improve my english vocabulary. I didn’t a lot of books when I was in school and I regret it because I had time and reading is so good for you. Because I’m so aware and critical of my english abilities from spending a majority of my time in Japanese I’ve been proactive with English. If I come across a word that’s unknown to me I look it up whether it’s from the internet or books. I’ve SUSSUGAKUbeen using my iphone’s merriam webster application for that. It allows me to star words and browse “history” where it shows all the words I looked up (it’s pretty long so I don’t know if it keeps all of it or up to a certain extent. I never bothered scrolling all the way down that). It bothered me that this application doesn’t have an export feature where you can export all the words you starred or looked up so that you’d have a very relevant and possibly familiar vocabulary list (some of the words are SO rare or specific with the definition i really doubt i’ll come across it again). I finally had an epiphany on how to use it to expand my english vocabulary EFFECTIVELY. One of my reasons I was discouraged from using anki to learn english vocabulary was that I didn’t want to add every english word that I don’t know that I come across because it gets inefficient because some of thesUntitlede words may not be worth putting in my deck bcause it’s too common (and I didn’t realize yet somehow since I spend most of my time in japnaese) or it’s too rare (as in useless but you know knowledge is power. perhaps not but for my purposes I would like to learn the most USEFUL frequent difficult english words that I dont’ know). For Japanese i pretty much do this where i put almost all words i don’t know in my deck or i put in que to add to my deck (que has been collecting a lot of dust). I can’t do this to myself for english because it’s my NATIVE LANGUAGE. My motivation for proactively learning english words is so that I can enjoy what I read more easily (for some things there’s words that come up that i don’t know and then when i look it up i think it’s so useful but somehow i don’t know it and i couldn’t have guessed the meanign, decrease word look-up, keep up with poeple my age (I’ve read those stories of people who were completely fluent and articulate and then went to a foreign country and could not speak fluently anymore after a few years because they have no one to talk to… and i’m sure because they don’t come into contact with their native language their vocabulary grown as much as other people their age in their home country), and so i dont’ look like a fool lol. I also like being productive and achieving things. I want to grow. I can’t imagine a year or 2 years passing and have nothing to show for myself. I’m talking about those people that play games on ipad and facebook all day when they could be accomplishing real shit like learning languages, reading books. ALSO I HAD concerns about the reading method for learning words. I recently had several instances where I saw the “unknown” word in the sentence and realized it’s actually familiar and that I’ve looked it up in the past (more than once or twice sometimes) and I had this new context in this sentence and I could not for the love of god remember the definition even vaguely. all i could remember is that the word doesn’t sound like what it means and I remember looking it up multiple times before and I remember feeling satisfied withthe definition in the sense thta after havingread the definition I thought the choice of the word was perfect. I know people say you’ll pick it up from context and seeing it multiple times but here i am looking at a word i ‘ve seen in context at least 2 times in the past and looked up 2 times in the past and it’s staring at me and it’s familiar but the DEFINITION does not come to me. i read the definition again and it’s as if i’ve never read it lol or i go oh yeah it DOES NOT sound like what it means. some words they don’t sound like what they mean at all or even opposite. sometimes the word sounds harsh or soft or something so i have something to go on to have it be memorable. so anyways this happened to be several times with several words and it made me think wow so much wasted effort.

anyways the EPIPHANY. maybe it’s not superb enough to call it an epiphany but in case someone else finds it helpful i wanted to share.

I found the perfect way to achieve my goals while addressing my concerns. the solution is use anki and use the MCD format where you blank out a part of the word or definition or both and then put what goes in the blank on the back of the card

EXAMPLE ( i KNOW THIS WORD, don’t worry. i learned it years ago)

FRONT: MELANCHOLY
depres____ of spirits : DEJECTION

===========================

BACK: sion

I can do whatever format i want to do on the front depending on the word. for example i might put the sentence on the front as well. but the format always HAS to include the DEFINITION on the front otherwise it’s pointless. it fixes the problem i juts mentioend above about wasting effort where i can only remember the word vaguely but cannot recall the definition whatsoever despite multiple look-ups in the psat. It’s up to me how i’ll tailor the format for a certain word.

the second rule is that the word that I put in my anki deck has to be “useful” or “easy to rezelllmembeR” (sounds like what it means etc). I either come across a word that satisfies one of those criteria and keep it in mind or write it down and then add it later or scroll through my m-w history and starred words (like I have to be strict with adding the useful and easy to remember words. there’s so many words there so i feel like I want to know all these so i’m smarter but clearly it’s counter-intuitive to add all those words unless they all happen to fit my criteria. some of them SO OBSCURE). It’s such a relief that my countless look-ups aren’t completely for nil. one way to satisfy the criteria of “useful” is multiple look-ups with the word or familiarity with the word only and none with the definition like I mentioned before. I’ll give you one of those words. it was AUSTERE. here’s the long entry on m-w

1 a : stern and cold in appearance or manner b : SOMBER, GRAVE
2 : morally strict : ASCETIC
3 : markedly simple or unadorned
4 : giving little or no scope for pleasure
5 of a wine : having the flavor of acid or tannin predominant over fruit flavors usually indicating a capacity for aging
synonyms see SEVERE

btw for the card i used concise dictionary. both of these dictionaries are on lingoes (google and download if interested in an internet free dictionary though i’ sure everyone is connected 24/7 nowadays) for me.

to me austere sounds like something FANCY, chic or something that has to do with trees or nature. so every time i looked it up the definition did not match what it sounds like to me so the disparity stood out to me but I could never remember the definition. with this card format i can remember it somewhat effortlessly. i have to put in the effort of anki but at least the format isn’t painful and USELESS like front; word, back: definition. that’s the worst format for me personally lol.. i know that’s the DEFAULT if not the ONLY format for index cards for those kids in high school that are like helpless sheep that follow all the bs of shitty study methods. nonetheless that’s just my opinion so feel free to disregard it! I’m very excited to see how this will work out and I will update on it if it explodes in my face somehow.

===

MY NEXT ENTRY will be on learnig korean and something I watched recently on korean. Sometimes I don’t have that spark or interest with watching shows but once in a while I get really excited about watching a show and i actually enjoyed watching almost every minute of the show. those are the best when you have your craving, you “digest it” and it’s just as good as you anticipated it to be if not better. what happened was i didn’t feel like watching even though i downloaded a shitton load of japanese tv and i have so many bookmarks to youtube videos, more japanese tv shows, korean shows , and i hvae my american shows on the streaming etc…. then i found about an episode of a korean show and i thought i HAVE TO watch it so i tracked down the file and got it and watched it. it satiated me lol. I also added a bunch of words to my deck but my comprehension good nonetheless 🙂

hilarious shit.

5:40 &&  30:40  . most bizarre way of spekaing japanese i’ve ever seen.

I remember seeing this in 2009. it was SOOOOOOOO FUNNY. it was on youtube so obviously it’s there anymore.

she’s not on japaense tv nowadays. one of the requirements of being on tv is that the viewers understand you and no one undersatnds her lol… japnaese people suck at english plus she talks mad fast…

a person who actually speaks japanese and english reallly well

there’s also sekine mari but shelly’s probably better since she’s american/japanese.

OH I VE BEEN DYING TO MENTION THIS LITTLE FACTOID. one of my motivations for the original post is the KARDASHIANS. I find them very dumb and i totally agree with kathy griffin with the kardashian voice. at first I didn’t understand why she was saying that but now I totally agree with her. they’re in their 30s but it’s not like they got taht much smarter over th eyears. yeah it is up to the individual what they want to do with their time but anyways i just saw them as the opposite of role model. by that i mean opposite of what i want to be lol. For some reason chelsea handler let them host chelsesa lately. I have no idea why… so they’re very very boring…. pedestrian… banal… base. for example khloe kardashian (I had to google to figure out her name) resorts to profanity and sexual stuff because she’s really boring and dumb…. that’s all she does. she’s extremely empty and boring. that’s what she did on chelsea’s show and of all the guests they could’ve interviewed they interviewed RUSSEL BRAND. In some ways I’m really glad it was him. So of course he’s known for his accent and his huge vocabulary that he clearly uses because that’s how he talks not because he’s trying to show-off or anything.  Of course he uses a word that they don’t understand and of course they admit that they don’t. At that moment I thought I don’t want to be 30 and still not understand russell brand lol… or not have improvement in my vocabulary in a more general sense.  I remember when chelsea was intereviewing him he also dropped some big word and chelsea seemed like she understood him (she didn’t look confused etc etc) while I was like how do you spell that ? I was watching hello korean citizens tv show and one of the guests was a girl who had an issue of the boyfriend forcing her to exercise like 5 hours a day? one of the boyfriend’s excuses to rationalize his behavior was that he likes games as in real life games ie bowling… therefore he likes leveling up and improving etc. In that way I’m not opposed to games because it is a good thing because you’re exercising and the game aspect is motviating. what i fucking hate is the game where you just click clickclick all fucking day and all fucking night and just get fatter and fatter and increasing your risk of diabetes, heart attaack, etc etc .

WHY THE HELL IS YOUR TEXT SO GODDAMN SMALL KOREAN TV.

Okay so I wrote a post with the exact same title about 4 months ago… and surprisingly I’m still watching Mad Men lol I’m on episode 12!! yay!! it’s life… you get busy, side-tracked,etc.  The show always shocks me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So what I did not cover in the previous post was the method for learning/retaining the vocabulary that I come across. I was thinking…. no one in their right mind would want to SRS their native language for obvious reasons ie NATURAL srs. I personally have no desire to srs my native language english. A big reason is the fact that i will most likely only see the words that  i learned from the mad men blogs only in my srs. I know what words are common and what words are not. there’s a reason I do not know x word. It’s because it’s never used. Or maybe the better way to word it is that I never venture into whatever media that does use difficult words like that. At this point the words that I find in the mad men blogs are just limited to those blogs. it would be difficult for me to try to learn/memorize the vocab via anki etc etc  that i only come across once or a couple times. so I was thinking doing the srs just doesn’t make sense because i don’t come across those words that frequently. by all means they seem useful or fun but i just don’t see it used that much. I would love to learn the

https://i0.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img18/3071/finb.png

vocab and be able to incorporate into my vocabulary FOR THE SAKE of improving my ability to describe /say whatever i want to describe rather than try to seem smart or brag. the latter is just not enough motivation for me.  SO I came to the conclusion that if i want to improve my english vocabulary i gotta change my lifestyle as far as reading more books in my daily/weekly whatever life so that i do see the words I looked up etc etc. It’s natural srs… like I said just srsing just makes no sense.  WHAT AFFIRMS THIS is my korean deck. it’s so bad. I see the word, read the definition, forget both, do the next card, have the same thing happen lol. of course certain words are more impressionable or had some specific circumstances surrounding my looking it up so i do get something out of srsing it. but some words just go through me a lot. i know it’s because of my lack of korean immersion/korean reading. but like i said i hate reading korean becuaes of no hanja. i really don’t know if they’ll ever bring back hanja or how long it’ll be till then. but i’m patient like that lol.

So i’m not sure if i mentioend in the previous post but I save the sentences in a nice text file that i addddddd scrupulously. i wonder how long it will grow. they’re split up into 2 different text files ACTUALLY beuase one of them is the text file that holds the sentences i saved directly from firefox via AWESOME add-on tool.

the problem is i only have so much time and i’m so exhausted all the time… it’s gotten to the point i’m just compromising anything and everything. it’s so depressing because I could be so much better at x y z and i just physically cannnnnnot do it. i’m not at the 100%. i used to be せかっち you know with the ajatt and whatnot but now i can’t even do because i’m exhausted and honeslty being sekacchi just really bad for your health lol.

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img43/1242/wshw.png

THIS IS BETTER BUT COME ON THIS SHIT IS SMALLLLL, does everybody have 60 inch tvs in korea???  to completely offned whoever i must say it makes more sense that the letters on korean tv is bigger or just as big as the text on japanese tv for the sheer fact that hanja is not kanji so it’s not as recognizable. with kanji there’s this instantaneous meaning transfer while for hanguel you gotta read it but korean people are use to it so they read it rather fast and almost effortlessly but MOST definitely not to the extent of hanja/kanji. kanji is iconic that’s why i think it makes more sense for hanguru to be bigger than the hanja. so that’s why i’m more pissed off at the small text. also,  sometimes i can’t access HQ video or hd quality video but when i’ll tyr to learn korean from it i’m completely fuckedbecuase the text is so goddamn small and it’s either unreadable or really ambigous looking. AND SOMETIMES when they use a font that is bigger than the usualy font but not as big as the japanese tv font they USE THIS SHITTY SHITTASTIC FONT THAT IS BORDERLINE UNREADABLE AND AMBIGUOUS and damn messy WHICH PISSES ME OFF . ㅇㅁㅂ ㅅㅈㅌ차ㅓㅐㄴㅋ etc etc ALL LOOK FUCKIN SAME. it’s goddamn annoying for korean learners and no i dont want to memorize that font like fuckin symbols. it irritates to me no end because that is ugly and IT SUCKS and it has no practicality to be at all.  koreans who are fluent don’t mind because they’re already fluent in korean it doesn’t matter that the font is sloppy and looks ambiguous they know all the words and can reason/inference the possibilities and the intended word INSTANTEONUSLY/EFFORTLESSly. hello THEY DONT’ EVEN know HANJA. why the hell wouldn’t they be good at that.  it’s like they want to piss me off. it’s obvious why it would piss off a okrean learner because it makes looking up words that much more tumultuous and cumbersome.  maybe it’ll even cause me to give up/lose interest.  oh and for japanese tv somtetimes i love the fonts they use and love the decorations they do with the triple borders and shadows and the effects. it’s just classy and perfect. there’s no overdoing it like chinese shows. those can suck it.

I WAS ALSO pondering about people who only speak english that suck balls at english? not balls but not better than me even though i spent literally 4/5 of my time on japanese the 0.5/5 on korean and 0.5/5 in englihs in any given free time for the past few years? You’d think that if the person only consumed english media or only used english they’d naturally be better than me since my time has been split like crazy between 3 or 2 languages. like the other day I was watching HANSEIKEi with ariyoshi, xx unni x leehyori + spica, and chelsea lately on youtube and just switch from one to the other to the other because youku doesn’t load lol. I was thinking how this is so normal for me lol while I’m sure any american would say omgs you’re so smart (don’t worry you don’t have to be smart. I know somebody who is very bilingual but not very smart). of these programs i have to taken screenshots while watching lee hyori because I gotta look up words. most of the time even if i don’t look it up, it doesn’t really affect my overall understanding of the show but you know… i wanna make the most out of my time.

https://i2.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img22/2864/a1xm.png

ANd a link to a related pondering i had about the relationship between ability to expression yourself effectively/efficiently to one’s content or skillfully and the amount of talking you do on a daily basis

and if you are not friends me you cannot read it. and no i do accept friend requests anyone.

and my suspicions are correct… you don’t need to do a big study to think of this possibility becuase you can’t make SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING.

>>

I was just thinking how oyu could be in a bubble and not improve your english grammar/vocabulary naturally from encountering it in your daily if let’s say you limit yourself to dumb media (some is okay no? entertainment is entertainment) or don’t challenge yourself or play games all day etc etc.

>>

i have a friend and she’s sorta lazy with talking??????????? she keeps using the word thing. sometimes the usage is just plain lazy and just unnatural. instead of describing whatever she’ll give up in the middle and say “thing” or say the adjective+thing (which sounds weird). I’m just like hmm… so you’re telling me that  even though i’ve been “ignoring” ( that’s what it feels like plus my japanese is damn good) english for the past 3 years or so but your english is around my level?  I just thought of how you  could be so lazy that even though you’re solely focusing on one language you don’t really improve.. I was seriously sorat nervous that my english be all f’ed up when it comes out since i’ve been just japanes/ekorean all the time…. and that since she’s all english that she would talk a lot better than me and talk circles around me /bigger vocabulary than me. I’ll admit my command of english is not as strong as before (Like I’ll forget words or it’ll take me anywhere from 5 seconds to 50 seconds to remember a word or phrase whatever. Like when I write my entry, it happens and what i do is, i try to remember it or use jisho — sometimes  when i see the jisho entry i’m like NO GODDAMNIT there’s a better word than that but i can’t remember the word lol.. I have a feeling that I’m not using colorful expressions/phrases that i would potentially use if i didn’t know japanese?? lol). in fact i’m not even sure how strong my command of english was before I started learning japanse. i’m starting to believe that it was never that good anyway lol.  I’m very introvert. I don’t talk. So it makes that i don’t really express myself well. BUT what i’m thinking is that since i  only knew english

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img822/9814/xdkr.png

I didn’t read that many books in high school and middle school. maybe a fair amount? after a certain point i was like i hate x authors. it was just annoying because a lot of authors are not compatible with me.  of course it’s like that for everyone. I would attempt to read something with lots of awards and of course it’s completely unreadable to me. I’d hate it when authors describe stuff. it was just really BORING and i did not connect with it whatsoever. there was no resonation. What you’re supposed to do is find the author/books that are compatible with you and whatnot. but I was just lazy and did not do that. so now i’m torn between reading english/japanese literature. i only have so much time etc etc.

So lately i’ve been thinking by trying to be conscious of or rather eliminate the usage of the following words may be the perfect catalyst for improving the expanse of my vocabulary in expression.

I thought of

SO

LIKE

THING (yeah my friend is a bad influence lol)

I DON’T KNOW.

you know
know what i’m sayin’

but I keep forgetting lol.

P.S.i notice that the “billingual” kpop idols ie tiffany from snsd tend to use the word “like” and “actually” “so” a lot. i know it’s because their korean is better and they’re really busy and tired and they use korean on a daily basis and their english stopped growing at whatever age.  but seriously the girl used actually every 5 seconds in this one interview lol… she was young though. it’s so interesting how the person does not notice. but then again those are popular words that can be abused by any english speaker who’s not very bright or maybe it’s just very conversational/lazy/popular english words. I personally hate it when people ABUSE THE WORD “basically”. I just think you know what saying basically ONCE is oka… any more is just treating the audience LIKE AN IDIOT! lol.

Idiots…

I was surprised I didn’t post this on my wordpress. i’ve only posted on my lang-8. to set the right tone for the idiocy that I encountered here’s a HILARIOUS clip that makes you go WTF AND LOL.

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img690/1657/ar6k.png

before I got this bullshit on my tumblr

http://lang-8.com/6467/journals/1737465

I asked hangukdrama since it’s even relevant to her and she’s from singapore and sorta indreictly since she loves her korean.

http://www.hangukdrama.com/korean-textbook-reviews-ewha-workbook-4-%EC%9D%B4%ED%99%94-%ED%95%9C%EA%B5%AD%EC%96%B4/

https://i0.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img34/783/qmq.png

Then I got the same bullshit recently.

It’s not even just a korea/japan thing.you could do this with pretty any country + japan etc etc.  basically this person has no clear assertion at all (if i were to ask questions like well what about the  half-korean/half-ajpanese people, what about all the korean people learning japanese, all the japanese people learning korean, the korean people marrying japanese people, the korean/japanese halves who only speak japanes, the kpop people making money in japan, THE FACT THAT KOREAN PEOPLE WOULD RATHER READ JAPANESE NOVELS THAN KOREAN NOVELS (it’s in the numbers), the polyglots on this planet… so you’re saying i should pick  one or the other? or i should pick korean over japan since japan did horrible stuff to korea? I should ban japanese from my life even though i love japanse tv? this person has no answers to any of this because they have no clear stance on ths issue at all.. the previous person who asked the bs question seemed to want to tell me what i should do or what i can’t do… then i said so you’re telling me to do this? then they’re like no i don’t care what you do. my repsonse was “if that is the case you wouldn’t have sent the inital message”). they just want to point something out and feel smart? it’s not even something to point out… everybody already knows.

https://i0.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img844/9977/35wm.png

I’m just curious on everyone’s thoughts on this… I guess anyone who is interested in korean and Japanese and are especially is a descent of either countries … or even if you’re not a descent of either country your country probably got screwed over by japan at some point. they seemed to have a hurt lot countries in history. Do you separate the history/love of the modern culture/media?  Does it make sense that i should stop watching/reading japanese/listening to japanese and dedicate myself to becoming fluent in korean just becuase i’m genetically-obligated even though i genuinely enjoy japanese media a lot and like i said before korean tv pisses me off a lot. when it comes down to it these people are telling how to spend my time since I love watching jaapesne tv, i like my japanese music, i like reading japanese books /internet/etc.  I can’t eat sushi anymore ? lol. this person assertion is NOT FORMED.

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img6/5576/of73.png

How do you digest the information?

their logic is japan did bad stuff to korea in the past so koreans hate japanese (this is a generalization)  so at this present time people should be aware of the history and follow up on the feelings of hate by avoiding japansee crap ?  BUT IF YOU DO that then you have to go into MORE DETAILS like how far do you go? japanese people make a lot of GOOD SHIT that you probably use on a daily basis. it almost seems ridiculous to avoid japanese crap incessantly because you will have to research and go oh damn this thing was made by a jap  A LOT and  then throw it away. people should go out of their way to avoid using any korean words that are of japanese origin?   it gets so petty in my opinion. The logic is that you’re avoiding japanese shit to “win” basically in that you “lose” if you do not avoid japanese shit. but if your wasting this much time of your life hardcore hating to the point that you’re spending this much time to avoid japanese shit with research and most likely your quality of life might be lowered since you forbid yourself from using japanese shit (but maybe some of the stuff you use in your daily life is also made by another country or maybe you don’t mind footing a bigger dill for a product that is inferior to the japanese counterpart)  it sounds like you’re “losing” in actuality. it’s just stupid

https://i2.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img820/9272/w0.pngf

that’s basically what I said in my lang-8. I don’t personally want to labor over this topic whatsoever and research history or wahtever. because it’s not gonna change the fact that I love myjapanese media and I will keep consuming it. NOT TO MENTION I don’t have that much free time so i’m always trying to catch up with my japanese tv shows. THAT IS ALSO A REASON  these people psis me off. clearly they have too much free time. i BARELY HAVE enough time to accomplish/enjoy what I want  (SINCE IT’S LIFE AND YOU HAVE TO WORK AND DO SHIT ) yet this loser is asserting that I should spent my tie like this (that’s basically what this person is saying though the person did not say that explicitly/directly). the people who are gonna make really vague/useless assertions are just losers. they do not sound/look educated in any form/dimension. I’m just curious on people’s insights/thoughts on this issue that i’m sure I would have more insight/thoughts about if I made my japanese ability/learning public which i don’t. I don’t like dealing with bullshit/ignorance… I know what annoying attention you get in public if you draw anime in a public place or you tell your friends I started learning japanese etc etc especially in america because everybody loves hating . I really don’t like that about ameican culture because it’s honestly stunting our growth and making people complacent . by hating, people are being discouraged. you could argue that some people may use that to fuel their passion or whatever but I think it’s more negative than positive. in the end, the hating limits your activity/what you can do when there’s people around therefore decreasing the amount of time you spend doing whatever it is that you’re passionate

about. in all earnestly I would get shifted on badly since my japanese is better thaN Korean even though I’m korean. But I don’t care it’s what I enjoy f u. It’s not my fault korean tv won’t copy japanese tv more hardcore lol

https://i2.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img820/589/4yn.png

pet peeve of mine…. konglish. ATROCIOUS KOREAN IN OTHER WORDS.

I’m just like if you cannot express yourself in korean then express yourself in english because the shit that is coming out of your mouth is driving me insane.

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img27/2347/8wnd.png
lately i haven’t had to hear/be subjected to this but sometimes i just am and it’s just damn annoying.  in that same vein, i can’t seem to remember any good examples… by good examples i mean the shit that pisses me off.

https://i2.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img404/4797/3bsa.png

hmmm here goes:
입어 it.  <- wtf is this shit. first of all everyone koreans korean grammar and english grammar are like oil and water you cannot mix them. if you mix them you get shit like this taht pisses off people. there’s worse examples but i cannot  remember them right now. like i said i’m not in that environment anymore thank god.

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img109/5825/2tzb.png

some sentence in korean with one or a few of words in english when those words definitely exist in korean… like the korean words that are based on the chinese characters or whatever. point is… it exists and fluent people know those words and would use them. you’re not using them because you don’t know them or the english words came to your head first? I honestly don’t know what is the reason for this bullshit. but this shit pisses me offfffff.

I also hate the opposite… when you speak english and then you insert some korean adjective or whatever.

CHOOSE A LANGUAGE. STICK WITH IT. stop being so damn lazy. don’t be like oh but i can’t express this in english blahblah…. then speak in korean not shit korean or shit english. DO NOT DO NOT LET BS LIKE THESE COME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH.

https://i0.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img15/9793/3in8.png

Of course like I said my korean ain’t fluent so I’m very curious of the korean speaker’s korean abilities (I’m not fluent so i can’t exactly judge the person’s korean to see if they’re fluent or not) …. seeing as this person keeps using english words in their korean-speaking i’m thinking are you trying to overreach yourself?  Like are they doing this because they legit do not know the corresponding word or phrase in korean? as in not fluent. Or are they just being lazy? what is the whole thinking process etc etc? It’s a paradox too right? It’s like oh even if you’re korean sucks you should keep speaking to prevent forgetting or in hopes of improving (my personal philosphy is you should do other stuff on top of the speaking if you really really do want to improve. otherwise i just get the feeling you’re just gonna speak in this shitty way for the rest of your life). The other side is goddamnit your konglish is annoying JUST SPEAK ENGLISH GODMDANIT.   besides annoying for me i just find it so embarrassing to be around/associated/talking to that person. i would never BE that person but i feel embarrassed for that person. what’s the point of speaking of korean if there’s that much english in it.

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img835/7008/fucx.png

If there’s any ACTUALLY fluent korean-american speakers with annoying korean friends who speak crappy korean or english-laden korean would like to explain the phenonamenum to me please do.

P.S. I JUST FOUND OUT FROM READING A BOOK that the phrase JUST DESERTS is spelled with ONE R. i always thought it was JUST DESSERTS since the meaning of the phrase and the word dessert corresponds better than deserts… and also the pronunciation of the PLURAL FORM of desert should DESERT with sss right?  (as in different from the just desserts pronunciation. ) am i dumb? does everyone know this? lol… I think I’ve only heard this phrase on tv or something… i’ve never read it.. hence my assumption.

Improving one’s English vocabulary

https://i2.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img51/7262/bakakaa.png

I was thinking about the standards i hold myself up for with japanese with the goal of understand 95%~ of the text that i’m reading on websites. of course if it’s of no interest to me i’m not going to waste my time googling that to find out what it means or what it is (sometimes it’s just something i just wouldn’t know because i’m not japanese and i haven’t lived in japan or whatever). Then I was thinking hey i haven’t reached this goal with english with the 95%~ comprehension for websites (well you could argue, not knowing or being unsure of the meaning of a couple adjectives/verbs/nouns doesn’t necessarily kill the comprehension… depends how important it is to the whole picture). It really is dependent on what i’m reading in english even if it’s a blog if it’s well-written they’ll be complex grammar where i’ll have to read the sentence again or they’ll be words I don’t know.  Some people are just good writers and they just use words i don’t know. Whether it’s blog entries or news articles, if it’s fairly well-written then i will come across words i do not know.  I’m not gonna start reading the new york times or whatever other boring ass newspaper to improve my vocabulary. that’s torture. I don’t do that for japanese and i’m not gonna do that for english. But I found a good way to learn vocabulary.

https://i2.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img23/1397/pikakarr.png

BTW you should know that firefox has awesome plug-ins/add-ons for looking up words and for saving text to file while you’re reading the internet. i downloaded dictionary.com and if you double click it tells you the meaning (I like merriam webster better but fast and efficient is KICKASS).  the sucky part is if you click on the audio thing for the audio bit it’ll take a while so i will actually hear the prnounciation faster by going to m-w and looking up the word than waiting for the add-on to fetch the audio.  I think with english especially hearing the word is useful and sometimes it’s spelled really weird or it’s ambiguous with the pronounciation. even if they have that gibberish to tell you how to pronounce it, it’s just a lot more clear with the audio. i’m checking out other add-ons so it’s more easy to collect/mine the stuff like with rikai-sama if you press S it saves the SENTENCE, DEFINITION, into a notepad file!!! like how awesome is that. so i’m seeing if any of the plug-ins are as kickass as that on firefox.

SO ANYWAYS the most important part is the SOURCE of the sentence/sparagraphs that you leran the vocabulary from. it has to be not too difficult/ridiculous/useless/archaic/etc and at the same time it has to hold your interest… otherwise why the hell would the context help you remember if you don’t give a shit about the actual thing you’re reading ie crappy newspapers.  It’s like AJATT  it has to be something you enjoy.

So this is what I found really useful/helpful and i think it could be applicable to other people … well bear with me. i hope somebody gets something out of what i wrote.

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img690/5534/dompx.png

I find mad men really useful for learning vocabulary.  i look up words they use in the show and what i always always do starting since some season of mad men is I read  other people’s thoughts and analysis of the episode. ONE is because the show mad men is just very sophisticated like the dialogue is just not straight forward sometimes i miss out or i misinterpret????? TWO it’s just a well-done and there’s a lot of shit going on (If you don’t think so, you need to venture out into the INTERNET.  THREE even if i were to re-watch it, i wouldn’t get as much out of it compared to just reading somebody else’s thoughts about it. other people just better at getting stuff out of that show.  FOUR lots of mad men fans do it. FIVE it makes me want to watch more actively for the next episode like i want to notice stuff as much as the other peeps. SIX mad men fans are smart/educated (some of them are probably old right? like they were actually alive in the 60s lol) . some stuff i’ve seen written by mad men fans are just so well-written with the sentence/paragraph I have to re-read or the big words I don’t know. SEVEN it’s season 6, i forget stuff lol…. like i said this show’s well-done with the continuity and all that. i’ll literally watch an episode there’s some character and i have no idea who it is ( I couldn’t figure it out just from watching the ep because i like said mad men is never relaly that explicit and clear) or i forgot who it was (they showed up in some other season) and then i have to refresh myself lol.  I watch it once a year when it airs so….

https://i1.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img854/6122/ugig.png

Even though they’re using big words I care and I know what they’re talking about (the thing they’re describing) because I watched the episode. It’s sort of a game too like they’ll describe the character as some word I don’t know and I’ve seen the episode so I’ll be like oh   i think that’s a fancy word for __ and then i can see if i’m right. but usually now a days i have no imagination so i don’t even guess lol. The reason it works so well for me is because it’s so well-written and i really care about what the person writes about. it’s just the perfect environment for learning the vocab.

Now I don’t know what to do with the vocabulary. I saved the sentences with the definition on a notepad which i later transfer to EVERNOTE (kickass progrma, highly reocmmended thank you tofugu though their entries of late are complete shit , very lazy for the most part) . I looked at the sentences i collected they really are a pleasure to read lol… like no wonder i looked it up. I’ve always looked up words when i read particularly well-written stimulating blog entries or news articles or whateve rbut i never collected them. but i feel like collecting is helpful because the context is just so compatible with me. like i realy really give a shit!  I don’t know about adding the sentences to anki or anything like that. I do that with japanese and i don’t want to do that with english. english is my native language even if my vocab is low compared to people who read many more books that i have. I do want to improve my vocabulary like anyone else (who has a brain). if you don’t know the awesomeness/benefits of reading and vocabulary on YOUR LIFE, then you need to read up on that. I was literally tortured by people who do not read much/possess much vocabulary which was evident in their vapidly empty annoying blithering conversations. check out my lang-8 for that, you gotta be my friend to read it though!

https://i2.wp.com/imageshack.us/a/img405/3103/hanseiei.png

so I found an awesome source to TAP to get the words that i do not know that i want to know. who wants to learn from a list from sat or act or gre or whatever…. half the crap just seems useless becaues you never heard of it. it relaly is like AJATT you gotta find something that’s enjoyable.  I do have a desire to improve my vocabulary and i’ve found the right medium. I’m not sure if this works with other shows…  mad men is just so SPECIAL AND well-done and there really is a lot to talk about plus some shows why would you care enough to read about other people’s thoguhts lol ie gossip girl/anything on cw for that matter. of course that show would attract fans who are good at writing and intelligent lol.  I’m also reading books too btw it’s just hard because I want to read japanese books too lol.

Basically I encourage looking up words while reading the internet since there are some awesome tools. there’s no reason not to. it’s 2013 bitch!  I checked out chrome, chrome has awesome addons/extensions too… the dictionary for that fetches the audio instantaneously!! so perhaps that’s a perk that can’t go ignored. hearing the word is really helpful to remembering it so that the next time you come across it, they’ll be a higher chance of having some feeling of familiarity.

here’s a copy paste of the stuff just so yo know what i mean… more clearly. if you haven’t seen mad men season 6 up to episode 4 there might be SPOILERS… i hope most people will see what i pasted and go i don’t know those words eitther lol. that’s what i’m thinking but i’ve been neglecting english for the past 4 years? loll with the japanese. I don’t want my english to turn to  crap or stop growing but at the same time iwant to also learn french a lot… not to fluency of course (that’s very very high goal) because first of all i haven’t even discovered what thing about france interests me.. the reason i mention french because it’s romance language and they’re based on latin so french itself would be helpful with expanding my english vocabulary but i’m curious as to how helpful learning french is vs. reading more in english with improving english vocabulary. because for korean if you don’t know hanja you can forget about expanding your vocabulary because it’s mostly (well  ALOT OF) 2 syllable words that all sound the same lol… the difference are so who gives a shit arbitrary unless you know what to look out for with hanja. i’m curious if it’s as helpful as hanja was for korean/japanese. but then again if i think of it as how helpful is korean for advanced japanese vocabulary (advanced? wtf is that lol.  I guess any and all words a fluent japanese speaker would know – that would encompass words that are based on kango, not based on kango) i don’t think it’s really helpful because they’re 2 different languages and they’re both based on kanji/hanja/chinese characters so not really…. not really for korean/japanese. yo know i read somewhere!!! it was on a language forum and they were talking about languages they’d forgotttten. someone said i forgot my damn german because all the common/daily convresation words are really similar to english and all the more advanced/difficult/beyond daily conversation words  are not similar to english THEN for french all the daily/conversation stuff was not similar to english but all the advanced words are similar to english… so they were saying german was more easily forgotten? unless they said it the other way around. so maybe learning french will be helpful  provided it is the way i wrote it.

sbs kpop star…. american idol ranting

Top 6.
ihai = sway ❤ is such a lovely song but I like the PCD version better actually lol. melody in pcd goes crazy at during parts of that song

e. michelle is boring. i feel no emotion…. her hairstyle this time is more flattering though.

the california guy... sang that song i love you baby blahblah lyric song which i only like becasue the original singer has a deeeep voice.  since his voice is not deep… rather it was screechy.. so noo.

bek a-yeun. saving all my love… boring 😦 I’ve heard this song way too many times. damn the oldies station!

OMG there’s a glee version. usually I don’t give a shit about the glee versions of the songs but QUINN  is singing half of it? well i only saw a 3 second clip but I love hearing her voice. i hate rachel’s voice…. it’s just so annoying after a while. glee version over this but of oourse!

blonde guy (no more acne blonde guy  so blonde guy = guy who can’t rap or sing) – yay. guy who can’t rap or sing for the win! very fun performance. you can tell he really practiced and shit… just a lot of performance with lots of people moving around.  just goes to show just because you can “tehcnically sing” doesn’t mean you’ll be half as interesting/entertaining as this kid (I’m obviously pointing at the American idol contestants) at least he understsands the concept of entertainment/performance. american idol contestants think karaoke = performance/moving/entertainment (worst misunderstanding ever). VERY FUN PERFORMANCE 🙂 JYP even gave him a 93 even though he said “the highest i’ll ever give you is 89 since you’re not good at singing/rapping” . Gotta watch his performance AGAIN!

bak jimineh. i found it to be okay. since she did that wizard of oz song last weekkkkkk obviously anything is inferior…. though i didn’t agree with their extreme compliments last weekkk… way too extreme.

my favorite performance this weeeeeeek was the guy who cannot sing or rap lol. it was a really fun/entertaining performance.

AAAAAAAAAAAAH MICHELLE IS STILL ON THE SHOW! 😦 this is so wasteful…… first the acne guy, then kim nayoon (she’s more intersting than michelle obviously just because she’s american lol),…..

they got rid of the american guy from california who speaks koreannnnnnn well (they never used english to communicate with him….). he always bores me with his song choices.

>> Of course they don’t do the American idol bullshit ie do cruel shit to the contestants ie sing for your life on this show and the judges might use the save on you RIGHT AFTER they find out they got eliminated… / wasting an hour or 30 minutes or however long just to tell us the idenity of that ONE PERSON who goes home. that shit takes 5 seconds MAX lol. but for some reason they don’t give the contestants enough time to sing the WHOLE SONG nor the judges enough time to say their FULL COMMENT/CRITICISM (their not using their brains anyway as far as i can tell from the content of their comments for the recap that i caught during the ep but… you know if they did)… but they have to time run MAD videos abt oh this is you’re journe thrououghtou american idol blahblha.they just spend their time horribly. it could be a fun hour but they make it as bland and boring and stretched and nonsensical as possible. not  to mention,  it’s the same shit every year. OH AND The korean HOST does such a better job than ryan seacrest. the korean host just talks endlessly and like feels in the gap so shit doesn’t feel awkward. he does a good job. cheers.

============

I caught a glimpse / glimpses of an american idol elimination episode. i was watching 3 or 4 things at a time of course so even then i’m sure i didn’t miss much. my comments are the following

who is jim? is twitter that pouplar now a days? what is up with j-lo. she’s 40 right? so why is she in mv’s like that. alot of body make up involved too probably? lighting can only do so much.  it just looks pathetic… like madonna. but anyways shit that pissed me off.

the girl who didn’t get voted off. she just gives off this horrible personality. maybe it was that hair accessory she had on or the fact that she was touching her hair frequently or maybe it was the fact thta i saw the recap of her performance ( horrible song by the way.. i’m not sure if even ali can save that song. I HATE THAT SONG)… but anyways she most definitely will not win.

well jimmy does do a better job than the judges at critiquing and whatnot…. j-lo/rendy/steven tyler.. they do such a horrible job as judges. they don’t give criticism nor anything constructive or descriptive wHICH does not help the contestants grow or stop being stuck up/stupid/brainless (ie that girl with a horrible personality that didn’t get voted off). there’s always room for improvement. american idol is so boring. i dont need to watch people karaoke. being a singer isn’t that easy especially if you want to become one of the good singers. modesty is required. Like I loved the scene in kpop star when somebody got eliminated and he said to the judges “oh i’m really thankful you told me what i needed to hear and not what i wantd to hear”. in the long run… you need to hear what you need to hear if you want to grow.

speak of which, there was this guy who is not very proficient in English even though he only speaks english? (he just seems like he doesn’t give a shit… in other words.. he’ll never succeed) so maybe he’s really dumb…. Ryan said to him oh are you afraid of becoming complacent since the judges always compliment you. he goes no.. i just want to be myself. i’m not gonna go around high-fiving people during my performance. All i’m thinking is… if you don’t know what complacent means you have really big problems.  this is complete bullshit. i had no idea why no one was like you don’t what complacent means?

I  ALSO HATED HOLLY… the girl who was the worst 3 or something. ryan asked her something and she was like throwing her hands up and whatnot and not really hvae much to say or anything interesting to say. I’m like this is tv can you please try a little harder than that half-hearted/half-baked shit.  personality is part of american idol… she doesn’t give a shit either? I just didn’t feel like she was acting in a way where she’s likable to the viewers.

so from the cap it seemed like teh song choices were crappy. also ,the guy who goted voted off probably looks like a past american idol contestant ( since there is only a billion seasons)… isn’t there a couple of them with that hair-type.

the other shit that pissed me off was when ryan sent this girl to the bottom of 3 and then he says right before the break okay guys so we’ll like announce the results after the break… actually he says instead of “after break” he says “after holly goes back the the couches since you’re not in the top bottom 2” or some shit like that. and i’m like FIRST OF ALL why are you wasting our time… don’t bring the bitch to the center of the stage in the first place.

the people they had perform on the show sucked balls. at first i was like oh boy band . one of them is sorta good looking… some of them are like not so i’m wondering why they’re in the bad. horrible performance…. especially when i’m used quality crap like immortal song. NM none of them are good looking compraed to the fictional band in the korean drama shut up flower boy band (don’t worry this english translation doesn’t do any justice… it sounds cool in korean)

the good part is the stage is bigger and fancier. bad part is the stage is not versatile (that’s the impression i’m getting… unless it can be versatile and they’re just not utilizing it)… to have like different sets/moods and whatnot. hell even the stage on immortal song isn’t that big or awesome but like they do shit so everyone’s performance is unique… really set the mood… really take someone to another world for 4 minutes… something that an amreican idol contestant will never do)

I have no idea why the ratings are high (they must be going down though). this shit is boring. americans need to learn a second language (and consume media is L2) already and jump ship off boring shit like this.

>>

OH WAIT I found this.

Back onstage, host Ryan Seacrest asks Phillips if he worries about complacency in his performance.

“No, I’m just being myself, dude,” the finalist responds. “I’m not trying to walk around stage and touch people’s hands and stuff. That’s just not me. I’m just having fun, man. I’m not trying to be somebody else. I’m just trying to play music.”

Ouch — that seemingly dismisses Iovine’s entire critique in a very flippant manner. But the singer would like everyone to know that he didn’t mean for his response to sound that way. Phillips posted a response on his official Facebook page the next morning (April 6), saying that he misunderstood Iovine’s comments and meant no disrespect.

“Thank you to everyone who supports me and voted this week! I appreciate it very much,” he writes. “I heard that some people took my comment the wrong way but i thought jimmy said if i dont move around i would get passed and all i was meaning that im not the artist who runs around stage touching peoples hands and sings to them, thats just not me so im sorry to who ever my have taken it the wrong way bc i wouldnt even be here without you guys voting haha thank you again!”

>> so in other words he is as dumb as i think he is or even more.  he most definitely does not understand what complacent means. actually his actions … i mean his words… just proves how complacent with himself even though he probably bores the crap out of any seasoned viewer (who’ve listened to a lot music/gone to lots of concerts etc). the fact that he even misunderstood jim like that just proves how complacent he is. next time ryan… don’t use big words with this guy. hell complacent isn’t even that difficult.

he most definitely should not win… we can’t have an idiot as our  american idol not that anyone cares. hell.. are the other contestants even decent? it’s more like who’ll put me to sleep faster with their soulless loud singing of songs i never want to hear ever again.

I mean even if for one second I would forgive him for misunderstanding JIMMY’s COMMENT by  LITERALLY moving around…. and pretend he knows what complacent means… so that would mean he thinks that moving around the stage/interacting with fans = becoming not being complacent and moving forward and becoming a better performer etc etc. no… that’s not all it’s limited to…. it also extends to the effort he would have to put in in tweeking the song, understanding the song, making the song his own, etc etc. so whether he was saying that because he understood what complacency meant and drew this asinine elementary decision or because he didn’t know what complacency meant and just said whatever shit that’s probably relevant to the word complacency… he still looks like an idiot.

I could criticize this episode more and more if i had seen more of it. but anyways the most interesting part was jimmy’s insight because unlike the judges he actually has his head screwed in and actually has brain cells and actually uses them since he’s getting paid to say shit. while jennifer lopez and randy and that rocker get paid for saying nothing…… you don’t even have to speak english that well to say what they say… it’s literally limited to 4 phrases.. so PATHETIC. the results show makes you not want to watch the original show in the first place since they show the meat of the performance and the people’s comments and criticism whether it’s read off by ryan seacrest or some other method. this show is so pathetic .
