Wow so it has been a long time since I’ve done a i learned lotta japanese from anime post. I’ve done Iron leaguer and slayers and battle athletes victory in the past and I am glad I did THIS PARTICULAR anime after those since this one has its own challenges. I thought this anime was really fitting and at my level. It was great listening comprehension practice and they use a lot of interesting language that I am mostly familiar with (I’ve heard it before etc and it just sounds so pleasant and wonderful) but I could be more familiar with that language of course. Well currently I’m watching an anime with Japanese subs and kickass english subs so it’s been a breeze learning Japanese from it. for rose of versailles I haven’t added all the cards to anki yet but so far I have 105 cards with my MCD format. I’ll probably end up adding a few more. my god I have 616 cards from iron leauger ( 52 ep anime) well that was like 4 years ago! ~ Anyways the reason  i haven’t done this kind of post in a long time is because I didn’t watc h anime! that’s what a shitty job will do to you. it sucks the life out of you at home and at work. i feel alive now. I did watch code geass akito because there’s japanese subs for it and that’s like the only new anime that intrigues me. everything looks like shit. is it just me?

I was able to get the lines I couldn’t catch from Japanese websites (this particular anime is VERY FAMOUS AND VERY POPULAR), Japanese peeps at lang-8 and japanese peeps at chiebukuro, and my ears after a re-listen + english sub help. I talk more about this in my other entries for slayers, iron leaguer and battle athletes victory probably.  I feel so vindicated when even Japanese people go I’m so sure they’re saying this but it sounds like this or that’s really hard to catch etc etc. Of course that doesn’t happen every line I have trouble with but even sometimes I can tell that a particular is just unclear for some reason maybe something with the audio from the 70s. YOU KNOW that is ALSO ONE OF THE reasons i chose this particular anime. even though it’s old, it’s popular so it had a blue ray dvd release in which they probably fixed up the animation and the audio blahblahblah. But even then there are a few lines that are just unclear etc probably because of the voice actor.

lol this is what i Love about cell animation. they always end up screwing up painting in the color for somebody’s hair in a frame or scene usually but this time they messed up the guy’s face! lol. there’s no zombies in this anime !

I have a lot of anime on my que list and I’m only watching one at a time because that’s just what i feel like and i don’t have much time. I definitely wanted to make sure I don’t end up watching shit so I feel more inclined to watch old anime. as much as i love midorikawa’s voice (zelgadis) and sakamoto desu ga seems kinda interesting ( but probably will fail with the execution) there’s like a 99% chance it’s shit because it’s new anime.  just my opinion but um.. somehow  I ended up choosing this anime. I had put it on my list on MAL because I heard good things about it when it got licensed.  I watched this show on a weekly basis though I did not watch every week.  I usually watched 2 eps at a time but if i didn’t feel like it i watched just one.  This isn’t the type of anime to marathon unless you’re at an interesting arc like the eps around episode 20. I watched with no subs and just wrote down the time stamp of the part I couldn’t catch or understand the line because the subs are so distracting whether it’s delayed one second or not. If this anime wasn’t popular and famous it would’ve been really difficult because of the all french names and how unrecognizable they are after they are run through the katakana machine. the english subs for this anime are pretty solid.

1) I love the animation style which is something I cannot say about most new people nowadays – of course it has its shortcomings in that it’s not as fluidly animated or just not as animated as new anime (this is an obvious one). also it’s  awe-inspiring to think that people actually drew all these cells to make it look like it’s moving. I’m so glad it was made then and not in 2016 because if they animated it now it would look like shit just because i hateeeeeee the animation style + COLOR scheme nowadays.

2) love the voice acting and bgm – i mean there’s always going to be trends with certain voices being prevalent and popular but i really just cannot stand some of the voices nowadays and how they all sound the same. i esp cannot stand the typical “cool and indifferent af” guy with the hair and the moe people. BTW I love OSCAR’s voice!!!

3) oscar – omgs i was watching darake episode (show with junior the comedian) about pretty lesbian couples (or was it the one about the onabe poeple which is japanese for ftm transgender! ) and they kept using this the opening song of this anime… so i was expecting some yuri elements etc in this anime and i guess you could say there are some but not really.  There are some pretty funny scenes (to me) /lines that only come up because Oscar is a girl (they were few and not forced!). I loved the lines in those scenes…. one scene involved a horse incident i believe? and the other scene involved rosalie? offering herself up to oscar. and another scene involved a very important ballroom dance party. You know if they made this anime in 2016 they would’ve made it unnecessarily forced or perverted like that bloody comedy anime (IT WAS THE same studio as welcome to the nhk or sayonara zetsubou sense I think so i was shocked at how shitty it was) that i couldn’t watch a couple years ago. what i love about this time period (I mean the 1970s not the 1700s) is that there’s dignity and class which is hard to find in 2016 anime lol at least from what i can judge from the pictures. there’s always ass hanging out, strange poses, etc.  they do so many unnecessary cringe-worthy crap with stuff like this nowadays so i’m so happy it was made when it was made. I think this must be the OLDEST anime I’ve seen in its entirety.  I can totally see why OSCAR is a really popular anime character. On a related note my favorite character from sailor moon is sailor Uranus!

for the people who are interested in this anime or like shoujo anime i say go for it because it is well-done. I certainly wasn’t into this anime after the 1st episode. It took me a couple or maybe a handful of eps to get into it. Also as with most anime there are some amazing eps and then some okay eps etc etc so it’s so hard to gauge how much I liked it/enjoyed it overall. There are eps that are like 9/10 or 8/10 then there’s eps that are from 6-7/10 for me sooooooooo….  There’s this one part where somebody goes crazy and the anime did a wonderful job depicting that with the background music and the animation. Like I said they gotta draw every frame so they sure af will not waste any. there were some amazing episodes and arcs that completely engrossed me ( i love me some court room scenes!). In fact there is this one episode in particular that’s very famous among the fans and made me SOOOOOOOO glad I saw this anime.  I am finally in their “club” lol. It’s one of those scenes that made me want to talk about it someone or at least read someone’s blog entry about it or the backstory or the scene in the manga to see the differences. There’s 2 eps ( there’s obviously more eps with surprises) that stand out to me as far as being shocking since I had never expected to see ithat in this anime.  Old anime can be edgy and shocking y’know.

I can’t recommend this anime to everyone because I don’t think everyone will like it since it’s shoujo and some people aren’t into that.I myself am torn because there’s amazing eps and arcs but some eps are not as interesting. Overall I’m glad I watched it because of the amazing eps or the shocking scenes that I thought I would never see in this anime.

the other day i was watching this super famous budget-heavy movie in theaters and this one was rather cgi-heavy and  I was thinking to myself holy shit  WHAT THE hell am i doing watching  old shit as in “old anime” which is just worlds apart from a Hollywood as far as the technical visual quality. Then I thought TO MYSELF that’s not the deciding factor as to whether or not something is enjoyable for me. When it came down to it this movie with its high budget didn’t engage me or give me as much enjoyment as I derived from this olddddddddd anime. there wasn’t certainly any scene in the movie that engrossed as much as that shocking episode scene but it’s not fair to compare a 2 hours 30 minutes movie to a 40 episode anime. the anime is at an advantage with the 40 x 20 minutes duration.

BTW I hate one-liners in movies for a multitude of reasons. They’re really prevalent and there’s always countless one-liners in super popular movies for obvious reasons. When they do that unless it’s really good as in amazing I do not respond to it. I do not laugh, I do not grin, I do not make a change in my facial expression. I really don’t appreciate laziness that oozes from one-liners and “awkward” scenes that generate laughter from some people from the audience. As a movie watcher I feel generally offended at their laziness. They just assume that everyone is monolingual or don’t read books or don’t watch tv shows and think we’ll be impressed with the lazy crap they spew. I think the scenes where they try to portray awkwardness WITH INTent to translate that into comedy are usually reallllly lazy and repulse me. I am intolerant and immune to that stuff because I’ve watched so much awesome talk/variety shows from Japan.

So I was surprised with the ending song because at the end of the song there is this guy yelling something and I couldn’t catch what he said the first few times so I looked it up and it still didn’t make sense to me completely. I thought to myself damn why is this guy being so over-dramatic? maybe melodramatic is a better-fitting word? Why is saying such cheesy things?  (it’s actually not cheesy lol  once you find out the context).  for the longest time I had no idea who the hell was saying this and to who he was yelling to until episode 20 something?? when that plot finally started. Yes I am not not good at recognizing voice actors. then LATER on I realize yelling part of the song disappears  in the later eps. I’m not sure what ep it was exactly but man that’s unique.  I applaud the writer or director or whoever that came up with this.

This anime does intrigue me to learn more about French history or the peope in it. The hobby or obsession that marie antoinette’s husband has seemed so ridiculous I thought they made it up for the anime but they didn’t. he really obsessed with that which is odd. I do like reading nonfiction provided it’s a subject I’m interested in and the writer does a good job. reading nonfiction is not the same thing as reading a dry textbook. I’m interested in reading the nonfiction just to see what the anime made up or included in it. I’m just curious. I’m not expecting this anime or manga to be super educational or thorough.

This anime was perfect for me for learning Japanese and I have come far from reading over my post  on iron leaguer.  Maybe this anime would have been too hard for me 4 years ago? who knows… This is what i love about having my blog. I write it for myself and I can look back at what I was concerned about or frustrated about and now I am like wtf you talking about.  If you’re at a lower level then you’re probably better off learning more useful common Japanese from anime set in modern times or other medium but it doesn’t hurt to pick up random words/phrases effortlessly from watching anime if that ends up happening. At the end of the day AJATT does work. Enjoyment is a must and sometimes you can remember stuff effortlessly from anime.

AB CLEANSER REVIEWS

Posted in korean, skincare by choronghi on December 1, 2016

I’m into AsianBeauty and check out the reddit thread there and blogs and also listen to the podcast snailcast.

I wanted to review 2 KOREAN cleansers from LJH and Cosrx. Both are low-ph foaming cleansers that contain tea tree oil.

( I was going to use a filter on my iphone to correct the color or whatever and then I realized the stupid filter apps degrade the quality of the photo and doesn’t even ask me if i want to save it as a png or whatever to preserve the quality. so i ended up f’in that and just put up a regular iphone photo. i shouldn’t waste my time with stupid details like that anyway)

Price:

both products are 150 ml.

Cosrx is around 10 dollars on amazon

LJH foaming cleanser is available on hkcplaza with free international shipping. if you grab it while they have 60% off or something outrageous like that it comes out to somewehre between 14 to 17 dollars ( I don’t remember exactly what I paid)

Both are foaming cleansers so they will last A WHILE IF YOU USE A FOAMing net which is really cheap. you can make 5 of them from the puffy lufa (?) from the dollar store.

Lather :  LJH gives a better lather. The foam is more dense when i make my bubbles witih theh foaming net. They both foam.

Scent: they both have a tea tree oil scent. the scent is stronger with cosrx one. The scents of both products don’t bother me but I do prefer unscented products. There is no added fragrance or liomene or floral extracts etc which are irritating to the skin & that is a must for me.

Cleansing Power: so I do double cleansing so I don’t particularly rely on the second cleanser that hardcore. My face feels clean and I have no gotten any acne from these cleansers. The most hardcore thing I put on my face is the waterproof sunscreen from biore which does not come off  a single round of  a foaming cleanser. that sunscreen is tenacious and requires double cleansing

HYDRATION  – so RECENTLY I used a non-ab product that had a high review on paula’s choice beautypedia which is the juju bar from drunk elephant ( also low ph and unscented) . The way I go about my skincare routine is that I wash my face and then I do shit and so my face ends up completely drying. I think that letting your face completely dry up is the best way to test how drying the cleanser is. SO anyways usually when I use the cosrx cleanser my face is tight to the point where I can’t move my face and make facial expressions. I thought that was because I have dry skin and I do have dry skin but that’s from the cosrx (I can’t believe that was the NORM) . WHen I used the drunk elephant for several days in a row since I felt bad not using it frequently ( the reason is the peeke bar is more for daily cleansing since the juju bar is exfoliating with clay bits) I noticed to my completely surprise how I could move my face and that my face felt less tight. SO i did the same thing with the LJH the next day and was delighted how much I could move my face( feel comfortable doing that)  I don’t know for sure which one is better with cleaning  without drying my skin out but the cosrx is a FAILURE IN THIS RESPECT. After this discovery I relegated cosrx to my body to be mixed with the 5% benzoyl peroxide body wash and I don’t notice my body being dried out…. It’s low ph  which I love 🙂

So in conclusion 1st place is either LJH or drunk elephant juju bar or peekee bar ( if the juju bar is good the peeke bar must be good too)

and COSRX is 3rd for sure. You would think that because it’s cosrx and it’s low ph that it wouldn’t be drying but it is. SO maybe people who don’t have dry skin don’t notice the difference between cosrx and ljh or cosrx and drunk elephant… but for me there is a clear difference.

Cleansing is an important step of your skincare routine and using a drying cleanser on a daily basis is probably wreaking a lot of havoc. I’m glad I made this discovery and hope to have served other dry-skin people.

I’m now really interested and excited to try out cleansers from cerave and paula’s choice. I’m excited to find the cleanser that’s at the right price point and cleans without drying my skin. It’s something I wash off my face so I really don’t feel the need to spend all this money on it. I’m not sure how expensive drunk elephant is because it’s bar and it’s half the size of a regular soap bar. If you use the foaming net and only use that to wash your face and neck I think it’ll last a long time. I got the peekee bar on sale this past black friday so I am looking forward to cleansing without the exfoliation that I get from the juju bar.

How I learn Korean with Anki

Posted in korean, korean tv, Uncategorized by choronghi on November 24, 2016

I touched upon this on this previous post but i wanted to break it down. I’m pleased with the streamlined process. There’s some info I have to share beforehand which is that I usually don’t take more than 3 seconds with each card and only one format works for me and I know this from my experience with learning Japanese (It’s just my personality and I can’t get myself to read each card thoroughly and slowly… as soon as the answer pops in my head I press the space bar and give my answer).  If you take more than 5 seconds with each anki card you should really reevaluate what you’re doing. As amazing as Anki is with the spaced repetition, if you use it wrong you are wasting your time and in the worse case scenario you’re deluded into thinking that you’re kicking ass in x language when you are wasting time.

(yes it says 3.9 secs but I’m still converting the format over for old cards that are still the traditional format of word in front and definition in front. I think that’s why my answering time is longer than it is because like I said it’s in my personality to press that space bar ASAP)

Another thing I have to mention is that I am only able to do this mcd format because of my current level of familiarity of Korean and my current korean vocabulary. I had mentioned in that previous post that I recently started this format because I finally reached a point where I passed this vocab level/korean familarity threshold where I am actually able to engage with the MCD card format and doing those cards are virtually effortless. Well more like really easy.  AND another thing I HATE IT when people write stuff off without thinking about the possibilities!! in a previous post I mentioned how people think TV is a waste of time blahblah blh but that i disagreed because ultimately it came down to the TV show because there are really well-written, well-produced shows with words I gotta look up words in the dictionary if I want to understand them in their entirety. Anki gets a bad rep too because people don’t realize the possibilities like the different formats of cards you could set up in anki. for me this format has been soooo good for my Japanese and now my Korean. Of course I am using anki properly as in supplementing my learning from Native Media as opposed to putting all my time and energy into anki. There is an ideal ratio of how much time you spend with anki vs your language and my personal belief is that in the beginning you should especially spend more time with the language and native media etc rather than anki.  For Korean, in the beginning when  I added cards in the traditional format of word or sentence in front and definition in back I could tell from doing the reviews that this shit wasn’t happening because anki does not replace actually spending time with the language. also I think in the beginning certain words are just easier to remember than others just because certain words are that much more common and useful and it’s overwhelming in the beginning with all the Kango. So even though I was adding these cards and knew I wasn’t actually retaining most of it I still did the anki reviews but I didn’t take it seriously. I would half-ass it and put as little effort into it as possible and I would mark  GOOD instead of AGAIN when I had no f’in idea what the answer was because I knew there was no point drilling this in anki till i “know” it because that shit will not happen. ANd now in 2016 I get to convert those cards into mcd format and actually learn them and actually engage with anki.

I was going to leave the deck I originally shared on anki and then share my mcd format deck but anki just ended up over-writing the original deck so… that’s unfortunate.

SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO  here is an example of the streamlined anki process!!

step 1) Watch a korean tv show that I will actually enjoy and gain something from. It’s truly amazing all the different information and stories I hear from watching korean tv and japanese tv that i would never get from american tv and vice versa. it’s enriching and I love it.

SO I found out about this episode of As I say from googline unprertty rapstar in google news because i LOVE unpretty rapstar season 1

http://www.ondemandkorea.com/as-i-say-e7.html

(this site actually has english subs but i don’t use them because that’s just counterintuitive for me at my level)

this episode features CHEETAH who was a fierce and talented rapper from unpretty rapstar season 1 . sometimes I torrent the episode of the tv show but for this particular show there’s no torrent for it. I enjoyed listening to alllll the guests in the episode in the end !  Another show i REcently did was 이몽사몽 episode where the girl was saying that her mom was a video game addict. I wanted to watch this episode because it sounded mad interesting.

step 2) I use my iphone and search for unknown words in my korean-japansee dictinoary while watching the show. I IGNORE any words that plop on the screen that are not words that came out people’s mouths like sound effects or describing crap.  Sometimes  I do get tempted to look up and add background korean text IF it looks like it’ll be really easy to remember like no bacchim. Usually they “sub” the dialogue so I can usually look up the word. If I find the correct definition i copy it and paste it into my notepad in my iphone. so while I do this I usually rewind the show 15 seconds using the left arrow (whether it’s the .mp4 playing or this website) or I just let the show play and rewind back to the spot after I’m doing looking up the word.

step 3) email that sucker to myself

이 정도 고통까지 느껴보면 여자는 자연의 섭리를 거스르고 있는 것이 아닌가 싶으며 털에게 항복하고 싶어져요 this is from a question onchiebukuro where i asked someone to transcribe a line from something tangu- show and so it’s tagged wrong but i don’t give a shit… point is importing cards into anki KICKS ASS.

one of the reasons this format works so well for me is that i am very familiar with Japanese so reading in Japanese is automatic as it is with english but i think it’s moreso with Japanese due to the Kanji and visual aspect of the written language.

step 5) import into anki

step 6) effortless anking 😀 🙂

as far as i know this is the most efficient way to go on about it and I got over 20 cards from this episode. I love living in 2016 with all these technology and time-saving tools.

by the way the oldest card in my korean anki deck is from 2012 01 22 which means I’ve been neglecting this anki deck for like 5 years before i truly started to engage with it~~ also I had started learning korean in 2011 summer but did manual srs because I knew the words i would learn would be common and useful and not worth anking and so my deck does not start from beginner/easy af. I loved how I had the clarity to know that that was the right way to go. it’s just not worth anking in the beginning of language learning imo except for like remembering the kanji.

btw generating anki cards for Japanese is even more effortless and efficient due to rikai-sama~~

Japanese Counters

Posted in Japanese, japanese learning by choronghi on November 13, 2016
So I recently “learned” /relearned 2 counters for Japanese which are Ittsui  and fusa.
ittsui is for stuff that comes in pairs like shoes and ear plugs.I’ve already encountered it before years ago and it’s buried in my anki deck but i didn’t actually know it until now.  just because it’s in my anki deck and i marked easy a bunch of times don’t mean i actually know it. I’m sure I knew it for like maybe 10 minutes a couple years ago then it got wiped from my memory.
So I was talking to myself in Japanese and thought hey is earplugs also counted as ittsui?  i googled it and it is 🙂 I like “producing” then checking anything that could be wrong since most of the time it is correct! 🙂 Another thing is the verb soguu. I was like hey does soguwanai work for this case and it did 😀 sometimes a verb will have the same meaning as another verb like awanai in this case but that doesn’t mean they are interchangeable. when you produce that’s when you inadvertently use a word and you wonder hey is that correct? and then i can look it up and solidify my understanding of that word or grammar. It’s also exciting and confidence-building if you keep getting it right despite your creative ways to use the word though it may not actually be creative and it’s the case that i just don’t recall the exact instance where i heard it being used in that exact same way by a japanese person.
fusa is for counting bananas and possibly some other stuff but so far I’ve only come across the usage for bananas and that must be why it took me this long to come across this counter.
ex:  banana  WO Hitofusa
i only came across this because i read a book and no the banana did not play a central role in the story.  imagine if i read another book instead perhaps i would’v not come across this counter until next year. but if i had gone to japanese grocery store like if i lived in japan i would’ve known about it sooner…
I am adamantly opposed to rote memorization especially when it comes to counters. I recommend reading through it ON TAE KIM without trying to remember anything and be aware that japanese uses counters and then learn them as you encounter them. i see no point of drilling/ rote memorizing something you will forget. if you’re obsessed with production then just use ko for everything that requires encounters lol. when it comes down to it people will still understand you.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE: i used the word ochiiru as opposed to ochiru when i was talking to myself and i knew in that instance ochiru would not work and when i looked it up lo and be hold it is correct.
another example: i ‘ll do some grammar construction which may seem incorrect or at least i’m not 100% it is and it ends up being correct 😀

Worries about learning Japanese in the beginning stages

Posted in Japanese, japanese learning, Uncategorized by choronghi on November 13, 2016
I was going to write about some worries I had about Japanese during my initial learning just in case this gets wiped from my memory.
most of my issues I was worried about with Japanese was stuff that’s not also present in Korean such as long-short vowels and intonation.  Well yes Korean has intonation too but it’s not as big a deal in Korean because Japanese is more reliant on it with the lack of consonant sounds etc.
I honestly pondered in the beginning how do the Japanese people not trip up when they talk fast and uninhibited with all damn long-short vowels そう じゅう しゅう だいいち おねがいいたします

徒労 灯籠 とろう とうろう
粗相 そそう= this means to crap your pants etc
which do not exist in Korean. The stressed syllables was one thing but having to hold a vowel for 2x longer etc was MIND-BOGGLING.  I remember when I was reading Japanese or trying to output Japanese when I was talking with myself I was very deliberate in my pronunciation of the long/short vowels and also with particles with wo which was unnatural but couldn’t be helped. I’m like I spent 0.3 seconds saying this so if the long vowel means you hold it out longer then I should hold this for 0.6 seconds lol… so there would be all this unnecessary stressing in the talking/reading because this was a challenge.  of course I would be SUPER LIVID when I watched a Japanese talk/variety show and somebody said something I didn’t understand and I wanted to look it up and there was a possibility that it was a long or short vowel or there was a possibly there’s a stress with the small tsu and sometimes i’d have to type out various possibilities and figured out what was said ( of course there’s homophones so typing out the variations is half the battle).  ALSO there’s words like DAIICHI or KEII where it’s the LONG-VOWEL for i which at the time i would’ve never been able to catch and loook up. oF COURSE if i could go back in time i would say bug the crap out of lang-8 japaese poeple.
The reason why the long vowels aren’t a big deal is because Japanese has intonation so like a 2 syllable word of long – short will always have the same intonation and the opposite of 2 syllable word of short-long always has a  certain intonation. and 2 syllable word of long long will have a specific intonation etc etc. I’m sure there’s exceptions but for the most part the intonation is a dead giveaway. I went from not even knowing there is intonation to noticing it then being able to copy it from hearing Japanese so much. my advice to japanese beginners is to listen to alot of japanese because what will happen is you will remember the word pronunciation with the intonation which becomes effortless after a certain point and i don’t go oh shit is it short vowel or long vowel. it’ s really obvious from the intonation whether that word is short and long or short short etc etc. In fact I think it’s incredibly DIFFICULT to speak Japanese and pronounce the short/long vowels with the opposite intonation while dragging the sound for the correct duration because it just goes against all the japanese input.  Kpop stars usually suck at japanese so their intonation is always wrong so it’s grating and sometimes they speak japanese with the polite korean intonation which sounds REALLY ARROGANT and unpleasant in Japanese. Also they suck at the long/short vowels so shoujojidai usually call themselves shojo jidai which means virgin generation…. probably everyone except sooyoung!
from all my previous entries about learning japaese and getting used to it this is also something you will get used to and not worth worrying about. nowadays when i read or speak japanese with myself I don’t think twice about whether it’s a long or short vowel… it just comes out correct with the correct intonation. it’s effortless and automatic.
as far as intonation is concerned i wasn’t aware of its existence and ignored it. when somebody brought up the diff in intonation between hashi and hashi i honestly can’t hear nor mimic the difference lol. I still cannot do it now actually lol. I probably pronoumce hashi with the wrong intonation. I”m fine with pronouncing japanese with correct intonation for the most part but isolated words like hashi is just like… goes over my head. But obviously context will fill in the gap and HONESTLY not everyone in japanese uses the same intonation for hashi since there’s kansai-ben etc
Knowing korean provides advantages for learning Japanese but they are still different languages. Think of SPanish and english yes they’re similar and whatnot but they’re STILL different languages and you gotta put the time in and get used to the spanish or the english.

Korean 101: Deuska no ka

Posted in korean, Uncategorized by choronghi on November 13, 2016

All right here is another korean 101 thing that I still didn’t master even though I started learning Korean in 2011??  Well my history with korean is  mad complicated so for that read the about me section. even that is not detailed enough to make things crystal clear but hey it’s the internet i have no obligation to spill my guts.

SO recently I learned about the korean equivalent to ka IN JAPANESE.  as in honyarara or chome chome desuka

this was from IU’s song 23. btw i cannot taylor swift’s songs. I wish she would do something about her camel toe. no one needs to see that.

I feel like I’ve never heard of this construction. I probably did but just didn’t notice but considering how long i’ve been at this it’s strange.  i’m sure the other Korean learners also feel that other grammar constructs that delivers the same meaning are used more frequently.  Is this common? it seems like it would be common or useful. It really is strange to me because I’ll watch episodes talk/variety shows and  I swear no one ever said muh-ge. I literally feel like I’ve heard every other construct but this for muh. Now that I’m aware of this now I can NOTICE if truly is useful and used. as of now i’ve never heard anyone use 뭐게요は文法的に or  무엇이게요 outside  of iu’s song

just to give a reference to make this whole situation clear I’ll watch a talk/varietyi show usually a talk show actually and i’ll understand 95-100% and i usually look up words that are unknown as i watch the show becasue the words are not that frequent to the point where i’m pausing the show every 4 seconds . usually i look up the word and rewind the show 20 seconds while i read the definition then rewatch the scene and keep watching and then add thatword to anki in mcd format later on that week etc. As you can tell that’s a lot of korean i’m hearing and comprehending in the span of the 50 minute show and it’s multiple episodes and also different shows so i feel like i have pretty good handle on common/useful/ daily conversation korean. so it’s like mind-blowing to come across something that seems so basic and useful and common yet i’ve never encountered it. and of course i’m not trying to be arrogant. we all need to free ourselves of hubris. humbleness is at the core of korean and japanese culture too!  I’m just mind-blown. that is all. that applies to this and the grammar thing from uprs 3

by the way I DO NOT INCLUDE GUHARA AND THAT OTHER KOREAN mc korea that talk like barbaric slobs in my comprehension percentage. it is irritating enough listening to their voices. if they say something and i don’t understand it or don’t catch it i do not bother rewinding though i do rewind almost always for japanese or for other korean people. when it comes to it it’s THEIR FAULT i didn’t catch it or understand it. also i only care to understand what i want to understand. I have the same policy towards beat takeshi and udo-chan because it’s THEIR DAMN FAULT i don’t understand them and they usually don’t say anything interesting.  i don’t avoid shows that star guhara and that other ugly annoying korean mc because that would just limit viable korean shows that much more. it’s hard enough as it is. and i have a feeling that part of the reason that they’re so hard to understand is because they’re lazy with moving their words and pronouncing and enunciating shit clearly. i have a strong feeling. it’s a conviction. so it pisses me off that more. if some fluent korean speakers would like to confirm this that would be lovely!

btw i love chiebukuro. i get quick awesome answers in a language that is effortless to read.

BUYING JAPANESE BOOKS FOR STUDYING JAPANESE

Posted in Japanese, japanese learning, Uncategorized by choronghi on November 13, 2016

11   pikaruu

SO far I am at around 110 books?  I know it’s more because i don’t register every book on dokusho meter because i don’t want to be associated with shitty books. and i’m excited to reach 200 and i certainly have a long list of shit i want to read so there’s no problem in that department. it’s just a matter of time. if 2015 and half of 2015 wasn’t so shitty i might’ve already reached 200 books and i am not exaggerating. it’s incredible what a difference changing jobs can make. BUT 2017 should be better for that reason alone.

I do not mean textbooks. and btw I don’t think Korean books can be bought on the cheap unless you go to book off in Korea, right?  I have no interest in reading books in Korean anyway so it works out great for me but curious if you’re shit of luck if your target language is Korean.

I think tae Kim and RIKAI-CHAN and google is PLENTY. I never bought a Japanese grammar book and I KNOW my Japanese grammar. it is not necessary and I’m glad I never bothered! FREE FOR THE WIN.  I mean books to enjoy reading whether it’s books with furigana ( I only have one book with furigana over all the kanji and that was because that was the only way that particular book was printed because the publisher wanted everyone to be able to read the story), light novel ( love slayers… not interested in loli moe gag shit that are plaguing and ruining anime nowadays), hard covers, bunko, manga, etc….

ANYWAYS 2 ways to buy books are in person and online. the option for in person is book off if you’re in south Korea or japan or NY or California… go to the site to find out more locations. There’s kurokuniya but it’s so expensive and you can find books people sold from kurokuniya (whatev it is called)  kinokuni? to book-off. I went to kinikuniya and gasped and left lol. It’s only good for window shopping.  for online there’s cdjapan and honto.jp?? and buying services but… I don’t want to pay for EMS shipping

here’s the list

CDJAPAN.NET

PHYSICAL BOOK STORES LIKE BOOK-OFF, KUROKUNIYA

HONTO.JP (EMS ONLY – EXPENSIVE)

AMAZON.CO.JP (only if the seller sends internationally. you find out by putting the stuff in your cart and checking it out but delivery is relatively fast… like a few days! )

TENSO (FORWARDING SERVICE which opens you up to all Japanese websites ie amazon)

cdjapan.net and my rationalization!

so I love book off in NYC because of the prices   like the 1 dollar section. there have been books where they’ll be in both the 1 dollar section and the regular price section which ranges from 3-5 dollars or even more if it’s hard cover or immaculate condition (but honestly everything in the stores seems to be good condition for the most part)  and so in that case I go for the 1 dollar one because there is no discernible difference between the 2 in quality. sometimes the 1 dollars are books are a little more busted or yellowed but usually they’re in good quality. BUT it’s far for me now like 2 hours so if take in the time it takes to travel there and the cost it costs to go there and the selection (it’s limited in that whatever’s there is there.) and blahblah cdjapan.net price isn’t that bad.  CDjapan sells new books so they’re going to range from 4-6 dollars unless it’s new or hardcover etc. (then it can go up higher) and gives you options for the shipping so I go for the cheapest because there’s no rush!!! I don’t understand people’s obsession with expedited EMS shipping and all that. Like with any overseas transactions you gotta experiment and see what weight will give you the most bang for your buck with the shipping.  What I love about CDJAPAN is that I can buy books that I can’t buy at bookoff there and they’re all new…. so I try my best to not buy anything I can buy at book off…. like popular stuff. Like I said in the beginning considering the circumstances the price that I pay at cdjapan isn’t that bad but you know in case I ever go to nyc I don’t want to buy something for 7 dollars if I can get it for 1 dollar or 3 dollars etc… like I said I’m not impatient. I can wait a year or years.  Unfortunately cdjapn can only sell books that are print ( but even if it’s in print sometimes they don’t carry it… there’s one book I WANTD TO READ AND IT WAS SO WORTH IT but it was not on cdjapan and it is definitely not out of print because it’s not that old.. they can’t possibly carry every fikin’ book. btw that books is ZOO 2 by otsuchi … IHIGHLLY RECOMMEND zoo 1 btw. btw I found it book off 😃 curiosity satisfied but I think I liked zoo 1 more) … so I can’t buy any ZEPPAN books 😦 it’s not like I’m obsessed with obscure books. it so happens some books that I want to read are not in print anymore. I am keeping a list of those books in evernote and dokusoh meter and whatnot and hopefully once that list is long enough and I carefully assess if they’re worth reading or not based off amazing reviews etc. I may look into a buying service in japan so I can buy used versions of them. book-off is a hit or miss because you can find some treasures and other times I know what I want to buy and they don’t have it which can’t be helped because it’s a used book store. what I want is a Japanese library because I don’t like buying shit. for English I try to borrow everything from the library.

here’s the other rationalization. I don’t spend money on stuff I don’t need to. I realize a lot of the times there’s an option to not buy something. you don’t need to buy coffee from Starbucks or decorations or candles or febreeze ( candles and febreeze are bad for your health) or soda  or perfume (why do people pay money to SMELL LIKE SHIT) or cigarettes. one of the things I thought of as a little girl was that I never want to become that 40/50 year old woman who douses herself in perfume everyday and upset everyone with her presence or  in other words emit effluvium. I think overapplying perfume is one of the most embarrassing things ever. I am anti-perfume so I wish people do not use it or make it etc. It is toxic.) or fast food  or snacks (I  actually prefer to starve or fast depending on how you want to construe it since it takes many days to starve to death – thank you books about north Korea- if it’s not necessary for me to buy and eat crap. according to a very INTERESTING book about notrh Korea they knew from experience how many days if takes women and men to die from starvation and it takes longer for women. it’s so scary and CREEPY that they have this knowledge from the wealth of anecdotal experience… why do that to your OWN PEOPLE over the dumbest shit).  there are some shit they sell in cvs’s etc. that I do not understand why they bother producing it and why people bother buying it… stuff like frivolous Christmas decorations and whatnot especially plastic crap that’s bad for your health. and it’s always the people who make minimum wage + too many children who spend on that stuff… WHY??? (well they’re not very smart so it’s not surprising. but seriously if you’re a teen mom what do you want your daughter to become a teen mom? of course not.  I think if my mom was a teen mom I would think she’s a dumb shit and hope I’m smarter than her and I only say harsh things like this because i’ve met impudent teen parents) but anyways I think a lot of the stuff that are sold and bought are so unnecessary and impart negative consequences on the environment and people around you etc. anyways it is one of my rationalization as to why I think it’s not so bad that I’m spending on money on Japanese books… I can’t borrow japanes books because I live in the usa and my only option it to buy and I go the cheapest route by choosing the slowest shipping and i’ve used my cdjapan points to save money and… reading is GOOD for your mind.  It makes sense spending money on this vs other shit.

In case this puts someone’s mind at ease I am happy to report that my “haul” from cdjapan went swimmingly and all my crap was in mint condition as it should since they’re all new 😀 I think it averaged out to 6 or 7 dollars per book including the cost of shipping. I cant make myself spend 11 dollars on a book. it’s too much!! i’ll wait the few years lol (usually works for popular books… when I go to book-off). I am happy to report that cdjapan is worth it and I don’t feel like I’m spending a fortune on books. they’re new and it’s convenient because they’re sent to my door and I get to choose the shipping method and I get points for my birthday blahblahlh.

AMAZON.CO.JP

OMG I cannot believe I never looked into this. the shipping is only 10 dollars!!! well for whatever I ordered it was 10 dollars so it was totally worth it. I always assumed that the shipping cost would be obscene so I never looked into amazon.co.jp since I live in the USA. This is a route that is absolutely worth taking if you are buying a large set of books like the whole set of a manga series or a book series, etc.  Otherwise you’re spending 10 dollars shipping per book. BTW not all sellers sell internationally. for the books I wanted to order only one seller would ship it to the USA so I am lucky :D. The downside to amazon.co.jp is that it’s only worth buying bulk so it’s not a good idea to order bulk of something you have NEVER read with the assumption that you’ll like it regardless of all the 5 star reviews on some site. sometimes the reason reading isn’t enjoyable in Japanese is because the book sucks rather than your shitty Japanese abilities. saying. There are some amazing books I’m compatible with that makes reading the Japanese language so PLEASANT AND FUN AND EFORTLESS AND THERE ARE SOME awful authors that are so frivolous and awful and it doesn’t take THAT many pages to figure that out. Now I haven’t read the full series so I cannot completely say my purchase was worth the money but I had read a few volumes so based on that it’s likely I’ll like the rest. EDIT: I ‘m almost done reading it was worth it.

ANOTHER option is TENSO which is a forwarding service. what you’d do is order books from online and have it sent to an address in japan then have them send them to you. I think I want to try it one day once I have a long enough list because I believe only EMS is available and that is HELLA  expensive. there are some books I am dying to read that aren’t available through the other channels.

Lastly I need to include some deodorizing tips for old books whether they’re from Book-off or amazon or whatever other reason. I’ve researched my fairshare oN THE INTERNET. here’s the info without the BS

DE-ODORIZING TIPS

BAKING SODA – get a big plastic tub, pour baking soda in it, put in some kind of mesh or grid like thing in the plastic tub so you can put the books in the tub without them touching the baking soda but still get exposed to the baking soda via the air. I’d say give it a few days or a weeeek. REPEAT as needed.. do not throw away the baking soda. save it to clean stuff like your bathtub or to stain treat your white shirts with the nasty, unsightly yellow stains.  mix HYDROGEN peroxide and dish soap to get a super useful paste to clean ANYTHING.

NEWSPAPER- put newspapers between the pages. It’s not necessary to do every page (maybe if the book is THAT bad). I’d say every 10-20 pages. give it a few days, a week. REPEAT as needed.

FREEZER + NEWSPAPER – place book in a ziplock bag then put it in the freezer. I say employ the newspaper method on top of it for good measure in case there’s moisture so that the book is not subjected to the full brunt of the it.. Leave in for 3 days.  the freezer has to do with mold I think…

NEWSPAPER – by it self.

AIR IT OUT – I’d say you’d have to it leave it for many hours to notice a difference. Of course the book has to be open with the pages exposed to the air/wind to make a difference. It’s tricky because you want air/wind but you don’t want the sun on the book. don’t forget about uva rays. they are omnipresent.  so I don’t recommend leaving them out for more than a few hours in shade.

SUN – sun is good and bad… you gotta think of the pros vs cons with the sun depending on the condition of your book. Sun kills germs and helps rid any excess moisture in the book which may make a difference. if you leave your book in direct sunlight for too long you’ll damage the book. the pages will turn darker and if you leave it in the sun long enough it will smell like the sun (which smells awful in my opinion). I think it’s unnecessary unless your book has serious smells/issues.  I read somewhere it takes 6 minutes for the sun to kill whatever germs it is capable of killing.

there are way too many fun books to read. do not waste time hauling textbooks. the fact that you’re hauling textbooks is very telling that you seem to be wasting money and you’ll NEVER BECOME FLUENT

Aw Shit. Never Mind.

So I just made a post about my progress in Korean and all that I’ve learned… (if you want more concrete info you can check out my anki deck by searching choronghi.. .but Like I said in that post I don’t really use my anki properly for Korean so I know probably 50% of the words in there as in if I were to encounter the word in a Korean show even if the card is in my deck I’ll probably look it up again!! because I have no idea if that card is even in my deck)
But then again I just learned the word “and” in Korean which makes it sound like my Korean comprehension ability is really basic and shoddy.

삼사위원이자 3반 트랙의프로듀서
When I came across this sentence in UPRS season 3 my gut instinct was DO NOT LOOK THIS SHUT UP IN THE DICTIONARY. IT WILL NOT BE THERE ( my gut feeling WAS RIGHT. I hate wasting time looking up shit that is not in the dictionary which is way more prevalent in korean than japanese). FYI all the japanese grammar is IN THE japanese monolingual DICTIONARY While for some korean doesn’t list all the grammar. wtf. So I went to chiebukuro and asked and no one answered and I wanted an answer sooner than later so I enlisted the help of the lang-8ers on lang-8 sure enough they came swiftly to rescue me from the frustrations of not understanding stuff.

here’s the explanation I got from a very helpful lang-8er 🙂

http://lang-8.com/869713/journals/146699303559777214863145541300399146030
That’s really high level grammer. Even though Korean, It’s difficult to differentiate their nuance. So, Korean SAT(수능) used to set them as questions. I’ll try to expain but I can’t be sure about that you can understand my poor english.

First,

As you know, “~이자” has no diffences in meaning with “랑/하고/과/와”.

“~이자” is actually combined thing with “이” and “자”

“이” is predicative pospostional particle(서술격조사). it can make “~이자” uses after noun.

and

“자” is conjunction. it can make “~이자” has meaning as “and”.

“~이자” is more like “at the same time” in english rather than just “and”, because “자” has meaning of ‘sth possess some qualification and another qualification’.

So, you can easily find “~이자” after human rather than things.

ex)
i) She is my mother and my best friend.
ii) She is my mother at the same time she is my best friend.
– ii) is more often transelated to “그녀는 나의 어머니”이자” 나의 좋은 친구 이기도 하다.” in korean rather than i)

Two,

I am highly recommend you use “그리고” rather than “랑/하고/과/와” and “~이자” as a meaning of “and”.

there are some grammatical rules in use them.

For example, “랑” and “하고” is not recommended to use in formal language especially dissertation and contract. because, they are colloquial style.

However, you can use “그리고” in anytime and any situation.

I get these moments in Japanese where I’m like even though I read a 100 books and watched thousands of hours of talk/variety shows I’ll come across something (words usually…) that seems so basic or easy or common sense that I still do not know… but none of them have been this extreme where I didn’t the word for “and” lol. Just thinking about the word “and” in English it just seems so ludicrous that I didn’t know it. I definitely could not infer the meaning from the context. And hopefully with that there are no more words for “and” in Korean that I do not know about… if it’s like archaic shit that hasn’t been used since the 1500s or something that’s fine (I don’t give a shit) but if it’s actually used like in an episode of UPRS I am embarrassed to not know it lol.

actually isn’t the more appropriate word to translate ija cum? If I think of it that way it is kinda advanced. I have yet to ever hear anyone use the word cum in speech. I’ve only read that usage in the books.

I feel progress in my KOREAN comprehension abilities

1. 1000 words I’ve looked up on naver since not sure… (I don’t think it keeps track of any word I’ve ever looked up)

Legal.High.E05.720p.HDTV.x264.AAC-YYeTs[21-07-43    .  huihui    lollzlzlzlkj

holy moly it turns out that I had looked up a 1000 words on my NAVER Korean to Japanese app on my iphone. This discovery prompted me to write this entry. So I pretty much only use this app when I watch Korean TV via my computer and by Korean TV only specific TV shows that interest me since 90% of Korean TV just bores me to death (but you know what I could say that about American TV due to sheer volume of TV but they American TV have some good dramas). I find that to be astounding because I really do not watch that much Korean TV compared to Japanese TV. the only Korean shows I watch are show me the money and unpretty rapstar and sporadic episodes of talk/variety shows only if a Korean celebrity I care about is on it (lately I’ve been into watching gypo/foreigners  – not the beauty suda show though… ) . it must have been over the course of the year… if I had to take a stab at it … in one ep of unpretty rapstar I could look up anywhere from 10 to 30 words just because I usually need to do that with rap lyrics.

ANYWAYS that number is mind-boggling and it just goes to show you every little thing really adds up especially if you use a srs or gold-list method etc.

2) I had recently decided to take a stab at spanish again. here are the reasons why : I learned spanish FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL ( which is about 6 years) and got straight A’s but I suck it and I think I wanna finish  what I started, I live in America (so unlike Japanese I’ll actually hear it incidentally going grocery shopping etc… for Japanese if I was super lucky on a given day there will be 2 Japanese people chatting next to me on a NYC train), it’s similar to English (which means it would be that much more motivating and EASY… though  I must say they are STILL different languages so it requires serious adjustment to tune my brain to spanish way of thinking)… and I thought due to similarities with English perhaps  it would be strategically more smart to go heavy on immersion vs. learning grammar/useful vocab and so in that process I attempted reading a book in spanish. for most spanish learners reading is easier than listening comprehension… I thought it’s similar to English so I should be able to figure it out but damn it’s still hard due to vocab that is uniquely spanish vocab and have no resemblance to the English counterpart and the spanish grammar. I’m not used to spanish grammar so it’s tiring trying to follow what’s going on since my way of thinking is only comfortable in the English, Japanese, or Korea way (I tend to just read it but not actually process since it’s written in an alphabet like English. so I guess reading spanish like reading unknown English words though I reading it with the CORRECT spanish pronunciation). SO I MENTION THIS because although spanish is SOOOOOOOOO similar to English due to my lack of time spent with spanish it’s pretty damn hard… but I find Japanese so easy and fun to read due to all the time I spent with it.  So my shoddy spanish comprehension just shows me just how “good” my Korean/Japanese are.

3) I am adding cards in MCD format and modifying old cards to MCD format. I wasn’t not able to do this before because korena was just not familiar… it truly would be draining and ineffective. So there are cards I am converting to the mcd format so i can FINALLY LEANR THAT WORD. i have so many words that i see it and have no idea what the fuck it means. it doesn’t matter how long it’s been in my deck since I TRULY TRULY  half ass my Korean deck because I just don’t give a shit so there will be cards in there from 2 years ago where I’ll take a look and have no f’in clue what it means. so if my retention rate for my Japanese deck is 90% then my Korean deck would be like 40/30/ or 50 % just because I don’t give a shit… I don’t use my Korean deck for srs in the sense that I could never remember the cards but still plow through picking 2’s and 3’s just because I know there’s no point drilling them.  The MCD format that I a m currently employing involves BLANKING OUT the Korean part or the Japanese/definition part. for the Korean part I choose the most obvious or easy to remember syllable so anything with a BACCHIM is usually a hell no unless I’M REALLY FEELING THAT BACCHIM  to mean what it means.

Like I said I don’t actually do my deck so I read the MINIMUM amount.

basically I would never ever remember any of these cards if it weren’t for the MCD FORMAT.

4) A Korean book I tried to read/learn from years ago… I’m going to guess 2011 or 2012…. I think I made index cards out of them to do manual srs or just said f’it and scrapped the whole thing

just for the competitive bastards who might be reading my blog here are a couple words off those pages that I do not know. it doesn’t bother me one bit. as far as I know in this point in time those words are useless. I love that I have this attitude towards Korea because sometimes my attitude towards Japanese was too much…. learning to let go is very important. if it’s that important it will show up again.  but if you’re trying to become super fluent you gotta realllllllly go after the intensity and the duration to learn a lot in a short period of time.  I don’t have that desire with Korean because I already achieved it before lol. that is super demotivating.

촘촘
움츠리다
산기슭 know it has to do with mountains but don’t know the actual meaning… perhaps mountain range?
반길질

수꿩

짝짓시
용암 actually I think I know this word….  due to my knowledge of the kango reading conversion from Japanese to Korean. it’s mostly like YOUGAN in Japanese.

some of these words may actually be in my srs (probably from adding them from another source besides this book) but I have no idea because I don’t really take my Korea srs like ido with my Japanese

Looking at these underlined pages (in pencil) now I will say that I still do not know all these words but now I actually do know some of the words…. by know I am very familiar with them.  HOWEVER unlike Japanese where I had a burning desire and motivation to learn like all the words to get super fluent I had and still have a don’t give a shit attitude towards Korean (I don’t have a desire to get fluent). So my attitude towards the words that I still do not know from these pages is that the words are probably really useless. By useless I mean… I haven’t encountered them recently and they’re being used in this short story so these words are probably not of interest to me. the words I’m interested in learning in Korean are words that I find useful and actually encounter ( to ensure I’ll actually remember/retain the information because other wise it’s a WASTE OF TIME) . I think as language learners we should be as picky as we what want to learn when it comes to learning words. do whatever you need to do make it enjoyable or bearable etc. delete those SRS cards that just suck.  another reason I don’t even interest is I have more interest in learning Korean words or grammar or phrases in rap songs because those tend to have the latest slang and offensive terms that I should KNOW! lol. smtm and uprs! I’ve mentioned this before that I hate reading Korean because I’d rather read Japanese or English because Japanese has kanji and English is such a useful language (they just both have more going on in the book industry and I just cannot stand reading Hangeul).

here is the mediafire .rar of the pictures files in case postimage.org craps out like imageshack.org

http://www.mediafire.com/download/2j88cv6ad5a9z27/korean-book%282%29.zip

this is actually 2 numbers because besides having this awesome attitude… I actually know most of the words that are underlined!!! There’s nothing like looking at something that’s super difficult and tedious now seeming less ridiculous and more appropriate for your learnig level. BUT even though the book is now at my level i won’t bother reading it because I don’t want to read it. As good as it feels knowing I know all these underlined words after 4 years  when it comes down to it I have no desire to read this book.  Like I read english books but I don’t just read anythig, same with japanese and the same with Korean but I really don’t like reading korean.

Like I’ve said in other blog entries despite what people may think  heritage language learners have it tough too I that despite what “advantages’ you think they have it’s very possible that they suck. and I personally don’t believe anyone should be obligated to learn their heritage language… people can learn whatever language they want to.  So here are some EXAMPLES I can remember since once you get better at something you forget the struggles and whatnot (though I have not reached this point in Korean, only with Japanese).

Before I started learning Korean which I started after learning Japanese I did not know common, useful, easy words such as
심하다
상처
초등 in 초등학생
at that time as far I knew they weren’t common lol.

OMG here comes  the clincher.  AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE of something that i probably understood but I would’ve never been able to produce myself. this is something that every heritage learner probably says….

that infamous line we all have to say at one point” I can’t speak korean”

so if you asked 2012 me pre-korean learning how do you say that… I would’ve said

한국말 못해요. I think that’s fine and dandy and really emphasizes that you really suck at korean but the better grammar construction is 한국말할줄몰라요. forget the damn particles, you’re just speaking and if the person understands you it’s fine.

But in all seriousness if somebody asked me that and I wanted to answer with I don’t speak Korean I would say it in English so it’s a nonissue for me. lol…. but just wanted to give an example.

there’s may be  more but I can’t conjure them up since it’s very difficult trying to remember something that you used to be unfamiliar with that you’re now familiar with.

here are some words that I consider REALLY easy that  I added back in 2012 January
다정
예의
버섯
looking at it actually most of the words are still hard lol…. probably more familiar than they were in 2012

5) I only try to learn real Korean lol. like I said before I have to use a lot of Google and chiebukuro because stuff I look up are NOT in the dictionary. likewise lately for Japanese I’ve been looking up 誤植 in Google, find nothing, ask on chiebukuro ad have Japanese people tell me that must be a typo or somebody made that shit up.. did you mean to type this?  seriously it’s gotten to this point lol….

there have been so many times with Korean where I would’ve never figured it out had I not asked on chiebukuro. it’s just one of those things where only native speakers  know it and can explain it. but seriously BEFORE I even embarked on my language learnig journey I had an instinctual conviction that korean is going to be harder than Japanese and this is one the ways that KOREAN is so damn cumbersome.  for japanese i don’t have to ask on chiebukuro to the extent I do with korean to the extent i do with korean since google just PLAIN  works.

5) blame Korean people for not being able to understand.
lol how arrogant?? you may think. it applies to instances where I cannot understand the person for speaking unclearly. for example if a rapper has poor diction I may not be able to understand them…. or maybe their diction is just okay… but as a rapper your goal is to be clear as possible so people understand you since you worked so hard to write those lyrics down.  here’s an example for English speakers… do you understand Adriana Grande when she sings… your answer is probably sometimes unless you memorized your lyrics and force yourself to hear for the words. she has poor diction. there’s no fucking way me not understanding her has to do with my English abilities. here’s another example can you understand chingy when he speaks English lol…. j/k but seriously wtf is wrong rappers like him who can’t speak English.

for Korean TV for some reasons 2 of the “top” mcs are hard to understand cause they don’t speak standard Korean. one of them looks like zakiyama and speaks in the intonation of this dialect and it sounds so noisy and unpleasant. I don’t even want to understand what the bastard is saying because it’s that ear-grating ad I know Korean mc’s compare to Japanese ones….  it’s a natural result since the owarai thing is so big in Japan.  in an episode of happy together all the foreigners were like I can’t understand that bastard and I had to translate what he saying into my native language for some TV show.  I don’t know what’s up with the other mc but he’s damn grating too. STENTORIAN!! Just throwing that in there because like I said in another entry I don’t want to sound like Kim kardashian when I turn 30! but seriously I hate it when people on Korean TV shows get super loud to say the most boring pointless shit. stfu…

6) not relevant to this topic exactly but I wanted to touch on that annoying question how long does it take to get fluent in x or what’s the shortest possible amount of time. So like I said I am not fluent in Korean. There are too many fucking words in korean that I don’t know including probably the majority of the curse words. I was thinkng I started 2012 but I never gave too much of a shit and most of my time is dedicated to japanese

but even then I still improved significantly considering 4 years is a long time. Slowly but surely there was improvement. I’m at a point where I can abuse Mcd and drill 50 words a day and succeed if I really wanted to ( which I totally did did with japanese) . It just would not have been possible in 2012 and once you learn a language you know when is the right time to be drilling any and all unknown words you come across because you know you can remember that because you have this huge repertoire of words you already know and a strong familiarity with the language. But I don’t want to do that because I just don’t care like that. 🙂

So if you want to be fluent in 2 years etc you gotta akatt and engage with the media

That’s about it. Can say much more but I have a life.

acne PART 2

Posted in Japanese, skincare by choronghi on August 20, 2016

lolslsls         sdfdsfsddsf

All right so I can FINALLY say that I have conquered acne. After I submitted the previous entry in 2014 I still got acne but not as often (I was also under a lot of stress and some serious exhaustion at that time lol… ad now i’m a normal HUMAN BEING . i don’t feel like exploding) and I got 2 HUGE ASS simples from using cosrx bha and aha incorrectly… by that using both at the same time. you gotta be careful with acids and work very gradually with them. but besides the inappropriate use I don’t think I’m compatible with cosrx bha/aha on my face… they just cause acne because those huge ass pimples were on places of my face where I NEVER get acne… Paula’s choice has NEVER given me acne… so PLEASE PROCEED with caution and work into it slowly like once a week, 2 times a week, etc. I do not get acne anymore!!! Like I said before probably there’s no point going after post inflammation hyperpigmentation without ridding yourself of acne. and as  much as there’s all this buzz around skincare ingredients that are “beneficial” towards acne (vitamin c serum blahblah)… you really need to go after the big guns that are proven to EXTREMELY effective from DECADES of data and research if you want to ACTUALLY rid yourself of acne. sure they’re helpful but there’s no guarantee. So I’m writing a follow-up /conclusion entry about my victory against acne.

So I’ve been 4 months strong COMPLETELY ACNE FREE since I started doing this

I stand by my points from my previous entry: https://choronghi.wordpress.com/2014/09/17/acne-tips/
here are some additions and modifications that have eliminated acne for me.

It has to do with washing my face. Isn’t it irritating when you have acne or acne scars and you do wash your face but people think you don’t or even worse have the audacity to say to you or ask you do you wash your face?!…. but now that I think about it you really aren’t washing your face. by that I mean you’re not washing your face effectively so you face is still dirty and that’s why you get acne.  I thought I had revelations when I heard about the awadate foaming net but there’s still more to that to wash your face effectively.

the face bar soap I was using before was too drying but the pH was fine… I don’t use it no more.

here’s a summary of how I wash my face in the morning.
1)  Rinse water on ONLY the parts of my face where I get acne
2) After it dries for the most part, apply benzyl peroxide gel (5%)  in those areas
3) After 5 minutes (or even less sometimes if I really don’t have time), rinse my face with water then wash my face Paula’s choice clear pore face wash only on parts of my face where I get acne (it’s a gel and so if I don’t use an awadate net I only do the vulnerable areas). Sometimes I forget and only use water but I didn’t get acne 😀

4) do my Asian beauty inspired skin-care including sunscreen. i had to post this shit myself because three’s so many beautygurus that apply sunscreen like some expensive ampoule or essence that they just have to use super sparingly. hell if it’s an expensive ampoule essece you should try to apply it evenly not sparsely!
https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/4y5pg7/sun_care_importance_of_sunscreen_application/

https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/4y5jtl/japanese_tv_show_about_pa_for_sunscreen/

DAMN the the misconceptions about sunscreen drive me insane  since  i had that shit banged into my hand from the japanese TV shows

5) I will mention a skincare product that is available in the US and is very good for your skin and hence will help with acne unless for some reason one of the ingredients don’t agree with your skin (it’s very clean on CosDNA). That is Cerave PM because it has 4% niacinamide… check out the summary on beautypedia… it’s one of those PROVEN skincare ingredients alongside retinol and LAA vitamin c serum.

ABOUT THE PRICE OF THE PRODUCTS I MENTIONED

I don’t think they’re expensive considering how long they’ll last. Benzoyl peroxide is relatively cheap (you do not need to buy paula’s choice etc… just get the cheapest one! lol…  5% should be plenty) and paula’s cohice cleanser may seem kinda pricey but it lasts a REALLY long time because I only use it on the parts of my face that are acne proe and it’s really slippery so it’s easy to spread. if you really want to use it on your whole face you can use the foamning net and minimize product usage.  Plus it’s really well formulated. you don’t have to the worry about the pH or it smelling it like shit etc.

**Benzoyl peroxide is effective but I could never get myself to use it every day simply because it’s so drying and it interferes with my skincare routine since it takes up a layer. BUT I read on reddit that it can be used to this way where you only leave it on for a few minutes. trust me, IT WORKS.

SDFJIOSDJFOIDSFJIDSO <<– hilarious ❤

nighttime
1) oil cleanser (sunscreen is damn tenacious)
2) Korean foaming cleanser
3) skincare routine

uguigiuI do benzyl peroxide EVERYDAY. I don’t even want to risk trying to extend that out to every other day because I like my acne free face. I have the same sentiment towards the Paula’s choice cleanser…. what if I get acne if I take it out…  For info on why they’re effective you can go to the website.

Weekly or Twice a week : Paula’s choice 4% foaming BHA  on a fresh clean face as first step (so I don’t have to use bha every day which is the case with 2% etc  ). This retexturizes my skin (I notice the difference the very next day) and keeps my pores clean like them blackheads.

Benzoyl peroxide and BETA HYDROXY acids are PROVEN ingredients with lots and lots of studies and data. Check out Paula’s choice beautypedia. and seriously what the fuck is up with those beauty gurus on youtube that post an acne routine and it doesn’t have salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide or they use shit products (you’ll literally see their face covered in acne and fresh acne scars in the beginning of a  make upvideo or they’ll say they still get acne but it really helps. all i’m thinking is bitch that means your shit routine ain’t working) and swears by them lol …

I want to emphasize part of the reason why this works is because I am VERY vigilant about it by using the benzyl peroxide EVERYDAY.  There was an article that was posted where they took super zoomed pictures of a pimple after it exploded and all that and it showed that after 28 days that “hole” started filling up again etc (HOWEVER with the naked eye you cannot see that). I used to be too optimistic or maybe lazy. I would get clear skin for a week so I’d think oh I’m over this “acne phase” finally the I’d get hit with a huge one that’s painful and all that. That cycle would repeat every 2 weeks etc… just because it heals doesn’t mean the spot where that pimple exploded can’t get filled up again. You should take that as a sign to be hypervigilient about that area of your face. For some reason I only had motivation to use benzyl peroxide if I had acne on my face or I had it recently but if I had clear skin for a week I felt like riding it out and testing the waters and see how much longer I could extend it. that is the WRONG way to think about it. You have to super pessimistic and assume some huge pimple is going to erupt on your face the next day, end of the day, etc  if you don’t use effective products like benzyl peroxide everyday etc. you have to picture the craters getting refilled with crap and germs…. and your first line of defense is benzoyl peroxide!!!

HERE IS THE MORE DETAILED BREAKDOWN of the actual products if you do want to read that. I hate it when I go to asianbeauty blogs and people go ON AND ON about their skincare routine and there’s no way to follow it.

nighttime
1) oil cleanser (sunscreen is damn tenacious) – DHC cleansing oil and SOFTYMO cleansing oil – white or regular (both have a citrus smell because one of the oils is of citrus origin… it’s not PARFUM). I’m going to try the SPEEDY cleansing oil from softymo because that one has no smell to it.
2) Korean foaming cleanser  – I am in the low ph face cleanser camp! ( asianbeauty reddit) so I use LJH tea tree foaming cleanser OR COSRX cleansing gel using the awadate net so they last much longer than if I didn’t use the net. they both smell like tea tree oil because they contain tea tree oil. it doesn’t bother me, and it’s not strong.

3) asianbeauty inspired skincare routine – i can attribute this to my state of being acne free by encouraging my skin to be healthy. for example if you overexfoliate that can cause your skin to become vulnerable to germs etc and cause you to break out (not sure how much bezoyl peroxide and paula’s cohice fash wash will help you there). so BE CAREFUL.

AGAIN REGARDING PRICE

i BOUGHT DHC whe they had a special deal for new customers because i just wanted to try it.  it smells like olive oil because it contains olive oil nd not because they put perfume in it. it’s costly so i wouldn’t buy it again lol.

softymo is affordable even having it sent over from japan via ebay or amazon etc. and if you use rakuten or buy many at the same time, you save even more time.

LJH tea tree fomaing cleanser is expensive but you can get it for like 14 dollars off of HKCplaaza if they’re having a sale.

cosrx is 10 dollars .. just 10 if you can get free shipping from membox or wish trend etc. it’s good stuff.

Here’s my paulas choice referral code for ten dollars off first purchasE

BTW I do not go to sleep early and i just cannot…. so  it’s not a necessity to eliminate acne.

as a little epilogue I’M SUPER EXCITED TO TRY OUT

shark sauce and stratia rewind to help with hyperpigmetation. unfortunately i have other products to use up right now 😦
